| High Hopes Meaning Floydians,
I always took High Hopes to be a song about Dave and Roger's break up. I totally agree with Stratman about the young and exciting years (our throughts strayed constantly and without boundary) with perhaps a hint of psychadelic use. I took "There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps, Running before time took our dreams away, Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground, To a life consumed by slow decay" to mean that since the breakup of Roger they are ragged or not as good and a reference to having fun before getting married (slow decay) and having kids (small creatures) that tied them down. I took "Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us, To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side, Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again, Dragged by the force of some inner tide." to mean looking back before the burned bridges of how great it was and trying to move forward with writing music but wanting to go back to the good old days or making music with Roger. For some reason I understood "At a higher altitude with flag unfurled, We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world" to be about the Wall, the peak of their success and popularity. Perhaps it was the flag reference with the Wall pictures of the crossed hammers that linked the two for me. And finally I figured "Encumbered forever by desire and ambition, There's a hunger still unsatisfied, Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon, Though down this road we've been so many times" that Pink Floyd still wants to make music because they have the desire but know it will be hard doing it all over again or that Dave wants to get back together but has tried so many times to make it work. The chorus I took to mean how it was always better back in the old days, everything was better the grass, the light etc. This is of course my opinion and has been for several years now about this song. There may be conceled drug references, but not really.
