Thought so. At first I thought it was option 1, but when I saw the movei it became clear that the trial is all in his head, symbolizing his having to make a decision of where to go in life . . . The result, tearing down the wall. He's spent too much time sulking over all his terrible life experiences, and is tired of sitting around in his hotel room wishing his life could have been different. Without the wall there could be a spark of hope left for life, but he'd also have to learn to make better decisions, and take his life into his own hands.
