My feeling is that (for the most part) Mr. Gilmour is now in a mode of automatic self-defence. This has been so prolonged that MAYBE EVEN when he DOESN'T mean it, he will automatically fire back an insult.

That kind of anger-by-reflex is possible. I have been in such a situation...even when I no longer burned with anger--the retorts and insults were automatic at the mere mention of this person's name. It's a sad state to be in, and a hard habit to break. I know. I've been there.
