I think (and seeing how I started this sentence, it's only an opinion) that the Floyd lost a lot of those psychedelic strings after Atom Heart Mother. If you listen to Meddle, it sounds a lot more down-to-earth. Everything after that is full of sound effects, but it doesn't really sound anything like it was with Syd or the few years after him.
