I can understand you confusion about the lyrics, IF you try to take them litterally, refering to flight and avaition related subjetcs.
Like most post Waters works, the songs and lyrics are a metaphor for Gilmours struggles keeping the band together and remaing creative and productive without Roger, and commentary about Roger himself.
I won't go through point by point but I'll give you my take on a few of the lines.
"Ribbon of Black..No turning back" Just a vieled reference to the unknown future, and commitment to carry on with The Floyd.
"Standing Alone, my senses reeled:.. Realization the he would head up PF without Roger as the creative force.
"Tounge tied & twisted, just an earthbound misfit"...Tounge in cheek reference to the fact the Dave acknowledeges that he is nowhere near the songwriter that Roger is.
Try thinking of the song in reference to Pink Floyds history and their situation at the time, and forget about the aviation aspect and it may make more sense. |
While I guess, I buy this, Dave has said repeatedly that he was literally learning to fly at the time and this song was about that. I have no reason to believe he was lying.
