I wonder if there is also an element of contradiction involved? Here are a couple of examples of ways to get the null set or impossible event:
Solving a system of equations and winding up with something like this-- 1=2. Therefore the answer is the null set.
Conducting an experiment such as a coin-toss and ending up with a result that is simultaneously heads and tails, or somehow neither. That is the impossible event.
Any thoughts about where (if anywhere) that might lead?
