Second, music is not just some wide open book of sounds. There is a structure deep down inside even if its s a style you have never heard before. You wouldnt beleive how far this "structure" I am talking about breaks down, if it were organisms it would break down into single celled organisms of that makes sense. The thing is, everything has a place.

If anyone really wants to excell in guitar and do it in a somewhat speedy manner. A good teacher will provide that assuming you put your time in and practice. See, you might be able to sit home and noodle around and make up some little riffs that sound cool to you. BUT! Are you going to be able to sit down with another musician and colaborate, will you be able to communicate what you want if you dont understand what it is you were doing to get that cool sound? Without knowing these basics I am talking about it makes your life as a musician much harder. A teacher will give you some structure to start with that will build your coordination and uderstanding of your instrument. If you have that structure and knowledge of what works with what you can then take that and morph it into anyhting you want.

The only difference is you can communicate when you uderstand your instrument. Just look at a guy reading tab, he will be sitting there and one by one start placing his fingers on each note shown. Where a guy that has some knowledge of music and the guitar could just say oh, thats in A minor and lay it out.

A good teacher will let you improve and get your talent out quicker than sitting home trying to nail down the latest Metallica riff. Essentialy, a teacher will give you the tools, how you use them from that point on is up to you and thats where all out different styles of music somes from. It all starts with the basics but ends up sounding so very different.

My teacher is a Berkley grad and what he has taken from there and given to me is hard to even explain. Good conversations along with watching this guys tasteful playing cant be desribed and a new guitarist would gain from this just from the inspiration alone.
