Apart from being a great musician, the whole business with Syd Barrett provided the band with some great material; and that has to count for something. I think the experience with Syd was necessary in a sense because it provided the band with a chance to really take stock, mature and gain a greater understanding of what they were trying to do. The situation with Syd was tragic because he was obviously a great musician and a unique personality, but in a perverse way, the band was also able to benefit from what happened because it provided them with a different perspective. That's what I think, anyway.
