But that's probably also the main problem with it. It feels like a poor attempt to rehash old days. Roger Waters is a musical genius and David Gilmour just isn't, he clearly is an outstanding guitar player but lacks the ability to put his heart and soul in an album the way Roger could. And therefor the music on TDB doesn't move me the way TFC does. TDB is not a bad album, it's full of good music. But Floyd has always made more than just good music. When Dave's stuff without Roger is compared to Roger's solo work and TFC it's so easy to see that Roger is an outstanding musician and Dave is just a good guitar player but lacks the ability to put that extra vibe in the music that has made Floyd what it once was. |
Umm... Roger is definitely Not the better musician. Fair to say he's a brilliant lyricist, granted. But one Roger Waters does not a Pink Floyd make. No... No...
Kinda comparing apples to oranges here, aren't we? Let's see... Early Metallica with Dave Mustaine... Now, Metallica with Kirk... which is better? Or pick any incarnation of King Crimson... which is better? Van Halen with David Lee Roth, or Van Hagar...

I gotta go with Stratman on this one. Both albums are Great for reasons of individual merit. In fact, All the albums bearing the Pink Floyd moniker are Great for reasons of individual merit.
Every single one of the Pink Floyd albums contain instances of sheer musical and lyrical genious. And every single one exhibit material that just falls short of the mark. The legacy of that genious is imprinted with the contributions of Syd Barret. And David Gilmour. Not to mention, Roger Waters. And don't forget Richard Wright. Or Nick Mason.
I can agree with the point that the sound of Pink Floyd isn't the same without Roger Waters. But really now, isn't that just a simplistic statement of the obvious? Can't the same be said of Syd Barret? Of course it can. So what. Go take your meds now.
Regretably, this thread has become too polarized to reach a meaningful concensus. I think a crystalectomy is in order. Don't be alarmed, it's a painless procedure and the benefits are just too great to overlook. It's a simple surgical procedure whereby a 5 inch by 5 inch section of the abdomen is cut out, replaced with a plexiglass window, thus enabling the recipient the ability to see where they be going when they have their head firmly entrenched up their ass.
Myself, I'm going to go play the best Pink Floyd album ever released, entitled:
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn with A Saucer Full of Secrets, such as UmmaGumma and More, honoring Atom Heart Mother and her Meddle-some Relics, which are Obscured by Clouds orbiting the Dark Side of the Moon with a billboard claiming Wish You Were Here, but you filthy Animals standing at The Wall won't make the Final Cut, due to a Momentary Lapse of Reason while ringing the Division Bell.
