I think that one of the problems of metal is that the search for aggresiveness and the constant use of power chords and riffs can make it a bit monotonous in terms of melody. But, still, there's a lot of variety if you take a listen to the many different bands that can be considered as metal. Robert Fripp played live with Tool and I think that Robert Fripp knows a thing or two about music (at least he has been in the business for nearly 40 years now).
Also, some of the greatest drummers that are around today play in metal bands. Just listen to Danny Carey from Tool.
