* Arnhem, The Netherlands:
The remnants of the British forces defending the bridge surrender or try to escape through the German lines. As the wounded are carried out of the cellars, they are treated by their German captors to chocolates, cigarettes, and brandy; it is ironic that the treats were from supplies intended for the British 1st Airborne, captured by the Germans.
A final radio message is sent out from the bridge defenders. It never reaches any Allied forces, but it is picked up at 9th SS Panzer headquarters: “Out of ammunition. God Save the King.”
* Angaur Island, Palau Islands Group
The US 81st Infantry Division defeated or isolated all of Angaur's 1,400 Japnese defenders. The 81st's commander declares Angaur secure. The carnage on neighboring Peleliu continues unabated - the bitter fighting causing horrific casualties amongst the Marines and Japanese alike.
