In Newfoundland, they call lakes "ponds".

The first time I heard a local Newfie call one of their tremendously big fjords a "pond" I squinted so hard I nearly poked an eye out with my eyelashes. He explained, in thick accent, that "Oi, goshen, a laaaaek's a hole in yer booots." (lake/leak)
