| Re: wall theory Maybe this will be of some interest.....
Back in 1980 after Seeing The Wall show at Earls Court in London. I heard that there was going to be an in depth interview with Mr Rogers regarding the Wall and its concepts on BBC Radio. As you can imagine I was quite excited about this and proceeded to tape the interview. Unfortunately, as the tape is in America and I am in England I cant access it and give give direct quotes but I can remember quite well what was said...
During the course of the interview, Waters was trying to be somewhat jovial about it all (bless him) but he did give some very insightful comments nevertheless. The first point that he wanted to get accross was the fact that he used many metaphors and analogies. Firstly he always felt that the fans, particularly in America where the infamous "Festival Seating" policy was in effect, were very similiar to charging soldiers in war. Rushing in mindlessly to gain "territory" "Worms" were is symbol for decay. particularly when, in this case, the mind is not working properly the worms appear and take over. He also mentioned that he felt his marriage to Caroline (I believe her name was) was a "Battlefield" again linked to the subject of war. The bit in the film where the chamber maid tries to enter his room is compared with the fans trying to gain entry to the venue...both an infringement on his "space"
Most interestingly, the bit where he is being injected by the doctor to help him "get through the show" was based on a real experience he had during the Animals tour where he was suffering from hepatitus (sp) and was given some kind of mind altering drug because the promoters were not about to cancel the show. At this point in the interview he goes on to say that during that tour where he admits to being quite mentally ill, he felt that he had an almost dictorial hold of his audience and that they were indeed "pupets" for his manipulation. He went on to admit that his feelings at the time were wrong and even went as far as to make an apology on air to the person he imfamously spat on during that tour!!!! (It was actually quite funny)
The connection between the comment about Hitler from The Damnbusters Pink was watching on the telly and him turning into a fascist leader at that point in the film, never occured to me, but it makes perfect sense. He was dillusional at the time because of the drugs and his already fragile state of mind. And as he already had ill feelings toward his fans, when he gets to the gig his transformation is complete. The fact that the fans already "know" the slogans etc.. is all part of his illusion. In reality the show is going on as "normal" but what we see in the film is his "fantasy" if you like.....
He also stated that there was no particular end as such to the film, it was a kind of "make your own mind up thing" He later reiterated this in susequent interviews I've read since Personally I thought this could be inteperated as the wall has come down but the road to recovery is just begining......
Anyway...sorry for being so long winded!!!! Hope its helpful!!!
