Re: Good songwriter, bad musician

I recently purchased ATD (Amused to Death), and I'd say I was disappointed to say the least. Pink Floyd without Roger Waters is like Kool-Aid without sugar, and vice versa. I mean I read lots about it and it sounded like a good buy, but I wasn't impressed. Sure Roger is a great lyricist and songwriter, but he really doesn't have anything without the band. I'd have to say my favorites are Dark Side through WYWH, and The Wall can be crammed in there I suppose. I don't really know if many people follow this type of sentiment or not. And if anyone wants to explain their opinion on Waters' solo career or his album ATD, then please do so.
And remember, "You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to, so that when they turn their backs on you, you'll get the chance to put the knife in."

I think you should give ATD a few listens before you decide if it's any good or not. I didn't like it the first few times I listened to it, but the more I did the more I liked it. I think it is an outstanding record. Overall I feel that ole' Rogs solo stuff is excellent. I can't get enough of ATD or Pros and Cons. His songwriting never ceases to amaze me.

You know, I think that the sum is better than the parts in Pink Floyd's case.

ATD has done nothing to me. I still hardly listen to it. Not that it is bad, but not my cup of tea.

"What God Wants (Part ?)" is a catchy tune.

Re: Good songwriter, bad musician

Personally, I found ATD to be Mr. Waters' best musical accomplishment.

Maybe it doesn't measure up to something like Meddle or Broken China...but since the attention is elsewhere (on the lyrics and sound effects), it is good enough, in my opinion.

Re: Good songwriter, bad musician

Personally i like ATD, and all of Roger's work. I think the simplicity of his music and his powerful lyrics are what the Roger fans like. But i agree that Roger worked best with PF. Listening to each solo career, i'd be inclinded to say that Rick must have shaped alot of the music cause his solo albums, well...sound very much like PF's early stuff.

Re: Good songwriter, bad musician

Yeah..it's good stuff
I think its goes like this:

Roger solo: Lyrically strong music; concepts etc
Dave solo: Guitar laced (of course) very gritty and bare, there are a couple of atmospheirc songs, but basically a guitarist album.
Rick solo: Instrument driven, very melodic, quite good, his work is very under-rated.

and Nick..well..sorry mate havent found any of your music.

Re: Good songwriter, bad musician

Well I agree with thorin13. I just can't get past the chick singing, and the guitarist is very much trying to copy Gilmour, but he is getting a cheesy, weak 80s solo guitar sound. And of course I agree that Rogers is a wonderful lyricist and he has great melodic ideas, but it's just not the same. I'd have to say I rather like "Watching TV" and "The Bravery of Being Out of Range" is definately a rocking tune. I can't say I'm a fan of "What God Wants" any part. They are just too corny with the sound and music. But either way, keep on rocking. And as always, Shine on you crazy diamonds.

Re: Good songwriter, bad musician

Oh yeah and it's totally uncanny that Pedge and I pick the same quote for our signatures. It was completely unintentional on my part. I'll change mine once I stop being so damn lazy.

Re: Good songwriter, bad musician

you don't have to change it. its not copyrighted. the only good thing about the guitar on ATD is that jeff beck is playing. i like him.
