Re: Cyber friendship???

I'm just wondering if there can be a friendship between two people who don't know each other at all and they've only posted some messages to each other on the net? What do you think?

Re: Cyber friendship???

Certainly--why not? I think it's no different than the idea of a penpal.

Re: Cyber friendship???

It's an issue of personality. I, for one, happen to love writing and corresponding--I may even be better at it than at speaking! A bit of the shyness seems to recede when I'm not expected to come up with a quick reply!

Re: Cyber friendship???

it just seemed like a difficult way to communicate. of course now its faster so i'm sure there is an improvement in that dept. still to me it would be difficult for the person to really get to know you. take for example humor reading it and actually hearing it can be different.

Re: Cyber friendship???

Sometimes, yes. Of course, it depends on how well-executed it is, and how good the person you're speaking to is at being able to convey their feelings on paper. My object is always to write in such a manner that you could read my words out loud and hear how I would speak them.

Yes, absolutely. And like eugeneaxe, I have indeed forged friendships far and wide from this and other Internet-related areas.

Indeed, getting to know someone and then meeting them is an excellent means of developing valuable friendships: one knows already most of their quirks and foibles, for if not, these will most likely become very apparent upon meeting, and one doesn't have any misconceptions about the format of the friendship because all of those tricky issues will (should) have been sorted out by the time a physical meeting takes place.

WARNING: Always arrange a first meeting in a well-lit public place, preferrably with lots of people about. You don't know what kind of loony you're actually likely to meet in person.

Re: Cyber friendship???

I would like to think that I have made friends here. The good thing also is that ppl anywhere from 14 yrs of age to 50 yrs of age can have perfectly normal rational discussions...
And good advice BoaB, I will be sure to take it into account when i may be some day meet one of you Floydians...
I also think you can get to know a person thorugh just their writing. Most of the time ppl write the way they speak. My friends always say that if they were to read my writing but not know it was by me they would be able to tell I wrote it. So all of you ppl are actually getting to know the real moi...
Anyway my dear outlandish cyber friends I hope you all agree...

cheers

Re: Cyber friendship???

It seems to be a pretty good medium for developing new friendships, in my mind. Admittedly, I've only met 2 people 'in the flesh' as it were (a bird from Colombia and our very own Driven) but these meetings have proved to be rewarding and, quite simply would never have happened without the initial internet middleman thing.

Cheers,

Mark
