Can you imagine ! I really dislike Dave's vocals on Welcome To The Machine ! It's dull it's boring it has no depth !
Nuff said. What's your opinion ?

Re: Dave's vocals I really dislike....

Dave's vocals were recorded at a lower range and then sped up for the vocal track on Welcome to the Machine. Perhaps that is why they sound unnatural. Dave could never reach those registers naturally.

I think the vocals on that track match the theme of the song nicely--they are mechanical and dry. In addition, I think the vocal styles match the throbbing of the VCS3 to give the song a very dry, if not futuristic tone.

I was never a fan of Welcome to the Machine until recently. I love Mr. Wright's keyboard work on it! The combination of the VCS3 and Arp Solina String Ensemble is quite pleasing; especially thank funky echoed solo at the end. Hats off to Mr. Wright on this one. Why didn't he get a writing credit on Machine? I am sure Mr. Waters didn't come up with those amazing synth lines!

May echo be with you,

Echorec

I don't know for sure if Rick wrote the synth line, but I don't think that Roger is incapable of writing a line on the synthesizer.

Re: Dave's vocals I really dislike....

I know this may sound stupid, but I don't see why it would be such a stretch for Mr. Gilmour to sing in those ranges. I mean, it doesn't seem THAT high!

But the part that goes "Where have you been; it's alright we know where you been" is high my friend! He usually had trouble with it live.

May the Echo never end..

I agree, Dave's vocals on Welcome To The Machine are not that great at all.

Yes, Echorec, I suppose it could be difficult. But given multiple tries in a studio, rather than only one go as in a live performance, I'm sure Mr. Gilmour could pull it off. It honestly doesn't sound like a sped-up tape or anything like that to me.

Re: Dave's vocals I really dislike....

I really like Welcome to the machine, but i also agree that Mr.Gilmour's voice sounds a little strange.
But what about Mr.Waters singing it on his "In The Flesh" album?
I just love it!

Re: Dave's vocals I really dislike....

I also like them. They have a certain remoteness to them, totally unlike the intimacy of "Wish..." which, I think, suits the subject matter of the individual song.

Cheers,

Mark

Re: Dave's vocals I really dislike....

heh... no matter if that vocals suite the mood of the song (which they deff.do), what i wanted to say is how surprised i was realising that there is at least one song with Mr Gilmour vocals that i dislike.
so there.
LOL (in a playful mood today)

Re: Dave's vocals I really dislike....

I love this song. The atmosphere (with the noises of machines at the beginning, etc... ) and the metallic voice seems are perfect with the subject of the song. It's my preferred lyrics of PF. The lyrics are disconcerting, I find it fantastic that all the song's atmosphere create also the same feeling. (ok ok, I know that you were only pseaking of the voice)

Re: Dave's vocals I really dislike....

"Welcome to the Machine" (7:26) by Roger Waters. Vocals by Gilmour and Waters.

Instead of jumping on Gilmour's back, you might want to acknowledge that Waters has his part in the vocals too.
Also, I think Waters'/Gilmour's vocals were purposely made to sound the way they do. Not to be over-dramatic, but I think they made their voices sound so desperate and sort of in pain, to express the mood of the great song.
