Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

Yeah, Waters wrote DSOTM, The Wall.
But he kicked Rick out of the band.
Yeah, Waters proved that he could substitute Syd.
But he humiliated Dave and Nick during The Final Cut.
Yeah, Waters is a great lyricist.
But he has a big ego.

I say he was extreme in everything. Tempermental. Cruel.

I respect his work...but as you can imagine, I have a problem with the person.

Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

I wouldn't call Roger a jerk. Don't forget that Dave also kicked Rick out and also wanted Nick out as well at the time. Roger is more emotionally unstable than a jerk. In his mind he's proven himself a good songwriter and wants to do his own stuff. How would you feel if you were the primary creative force in a band and they told you that writing about your father was stupid? Roger did ask Nick and Dave if they wanted him to make Final Cut a solo album. They all said no. Because they wanted some of the $ for it. Roger is indeed the least "greedy" of all of em. Roger is more interested in relaying a message to his audience than the rest of the Floyd. And Roger by far is the best songwriter. Overall I'd say Roger, Dave, Nick, and oh yeah rick together make up a genius. Together they stand divided they fall.

Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

I think Mr. Waters is terribly insecure. He seems better now, but that was the main issue, I think. Insecure with himself, he lashed out at others to hide his pain.

Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

he's still ajerk especially because he still hasn't tried to repair the relationship with any of the band members. and from what i've heard the others collectively have tried in some form or another. and if you ever hear or read interviews he is such a bastard. still i like him.

Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

And Mr. Wright tried the hardest of all. Doesn't that say something about him? I think that guy really knows what the term FORGIVENESS means. How many of us are capable of doing that, despite deep hurt? Imagine the person who hurt you most in your life. And imagine--WITHOUT suddenly becoming an amnesiac--in your heart overturning all the hate. You never forget the pain. But you no longer feel animosity towards the other person.

Is that not a hard thing to do?

Anyone who doubts Mr. Wright's bravery should consider that, among other things.

Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

Roger is a genious and a prick. Anyway, Dave did not kick Rick out. Roger said the Wall was going to be a solo project if Rick stayed, so he agreed to leave. The only person who ever said that Dave wanted to kick Nick out of the band was Roger. Unless you are new to the Floyd scene, you know that what some of the things he says are complete crap said to make him look better.

I am a huge Roger fan, but I can see past all the good stuff that he has done and see the negitive as well.

Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

David did not want Rick out of the band. Dave told Rick that he would support him if he wanted to stay in the band, but he didnt see the point if Rick wasn't going to contribute. When it came down to it, Rick decided he didn't want to be in the band anymore anyways, so he agreed to bow out. At no time did David want Nick out of the band either. Rumours that David wanted Nick out to open the door for Jeff Porcaro are totally unsubstantiated claims made by Roger; nothing but propaganda made up to try to cause a rift between Nick and David. Also, David and Nick did not want The Final Cut to be a Pink Floyd album because of the money, they wanted to fulfill the commitment to the record company to deliver a PF album. All of the members had more than enough money long before The Wall and The Final Cut were ever recorded.

Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

I personally think Mr. Gilmour should've stood against Mr. Waters on principle--because the way he was acting was wrong--whether or not Mr. Wright wished to continue. That whole mess was just sad, all the way around.

BTW--I know in detail what he did to Mr. Wright, but what exactly did Mr. Waters do to humiliate the other two during The Final Cut?

Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

Well if you want to get technical, it is more than likely Dave and Nick did the Final Cut for the money seeing as how the Wall Tour cost so much to run that they were pretty much bankrupt afterwords.

Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

The Wall shows did cost a fortune to perform, but they didn't leave the band "broke" as you claim. The band simply didn't make any profit or even break even. While they took a loss, it was not substantial. Get your facts straight. Floyd's minor "bankruptcy", which you may be thinking of, happened around the time of Animals. After the enormous sales of The Wall studio album, this was hardly an issue.

Re: Roger Waters: genius, jerk or both?

Roger was an amazing song writer I will certanly give him that. But he was also an uphimself f***en British wanker (this is not to say all british are wankers so take no offence). He has no thought for other ppls feelings... And he refuses to talk to any of them... In my books that is unforgivable!

cheers

I should really proof read stuff fisrt so I don't have to keep editing for typos...
