Re: Clare Torry--Did anyone else feel this way?

I remember reading an article in Guitar World magazine fairly recently in which Clare Torry was asked about her performance in "Great Gig". I don't know how many of you remember this (and I don't have the article on me)...but I remember being awfully incensed by her demeanour in that article. Did anyone else get the idea she was trying to claim WAY too much credit for "Great Gig"? Sure, her singing was beautiful...but WHO WROTE IT???

Re: Clare Torry--Did anyone else feel this way?

She was given a melody and told to improvise.

Cheers,

Mark

I guess I just have a sensitive spot when it comes to Mr. Wright's work and proper credits. I just didn't like her tone, for some reason...sounded a bit full of herself...

Maybe she was a little pissed about getting paid 30 quid to perform a lead vocal on an album that sold over 27 million copies, receiving no royalties. Give her a break.

Re: Clare Torry--Did anyone else feel this way?

Here's my question. Didn't she read the fine print before she signed the contract? I mean, this seems like an obvious possibility one would have to carry in mind whenever doing this kind of performance. I guess I can understand she'd be kicking herself now, maybe even a little bitterness. But still, I think she may be TOO bitter. I wonder...do you think that's why she did KAOS?

Too bitter? We're talking thousands of thousands of, um, pounds. Pretty inconsiderate of the Floyd, not even making a contract with her or anything for royalties, don't you think?

no. i think most session musicians or all of them are paid on a one time payment. for services rendered and then they are off.

Re: Clare Torry--Did anyone else feel this way?

Exactly my thought, Thorin. You should look at the kind of deal you're agreeing to before you sign on the dotted line. If you are not willing to accept all of the implications of that agreement, you should reconsider. I am a real stickler about that--I have actually irritated people by insisting on reading everything I sign, believe it or not!

Re: Clare Torry--Did anyone else feel this way?

My question was always why Floyd never took Clare on tour with them.

Don't feel bad, Radiochair!

But I'm curious to see if your opinion remains the same. I am not trying to be mean by asking.

Re: Clare Torry--Did anyone else feel this way?

Floydwaters, my opinion would still be pretty much the same. She pretty much is "The Great Gig in the Sky", on of the highlights of the album, the album goes on to sell a billion copies, and she gets 30 quid.

Re: Clare Torry--Did anyone else feel this way?

Here's the deal. When she recorded the vocal (in about 20 takes, then spliced together), no one had any idea how well the album would sell. If the contract was for a small amount, so be it.
I admire the work Clare did for Great Gig, and can see why she would get a little miffed about the money, but a deal's a deal.
