Post Retro TV

With such hunger for nostalgia, many of the shows from yesteryear are still on TV.

Can you bear to watch any of them now? Which do you remember most fondly?

Here’s one with a cult following that I never tire of seeing: Police Squad!

When thinking of the shows I used to like best, I always think first of Benny Hill, Les Dawson on Blankety Blank and The Two Ronnies. How they made us smile.

I rarely missed The Chart Show on Saturday afternoons; no annoying presenter, no hip vee-jays, no lip-synching or silly dancing before an equally-silly audience, just blocky computer graphics and garish music videos crammed together. Lovely.

Do you recall Going for Gold? That was always something you could depend on after lunch - and Neighbours - when you were off school with a probably feigned illness and could do little else but wait for the inevitable Columbo repeat (your cue to make a miraculous recovery and feel well enough to return to school at once).

The Seventies and Eighties were times of corny theme music, rubbish game show prizes, coiffured hair, striped orange and brown sweaters, canned laughter and car chases with revolving scenery in the background. What of the Sixties?

Saturdays back then were all about a morning spent in front of the TV watching cartoons, glove puppets and forewarned celebrities getting covered in goo; afternoon play with friends interrupted only by wrestling (the real type, with Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy), that convenient Tom and Jerry filler and The A-Team.

Then, after all that, you’d stay up until the cruel hour of 11pm to catch some football highlights - the only time you’d see any coverage apart from the cup final.

So don your (oversized, Dame Edna Everage-style) rose-tinted spectacles and remember what we used to watch back when TV was so much better… Or was it?

Theme tunes, comedy clips and children’s programmes are surely deserved of their own entries, so please hold those thoughts - and links - for the time being.

Or, like every TV executive working today, prepare to repeat the best bits.
