Re: bands that do good covers

The most unusual cover I heard was The Sisters of Mercy opening their set with Comfortably Numb. Andrew Eldritch's voice was fine for the Waters parts but couldn't match the Gilmour parts, and the guitar section was radically different. It did capture a mood and was generally well received. Incidentally they segued it into one of their own songs, Some Kind of Stranger after the second solo.

Re: bands that do good covers

Personally, I think I am the best cover "band" I've ever heard! I do most of my shows in my Dodge Ram. My wife thinks I'm a dork (especially when I perform "Great Gig in the Sky"). Other people laugh and shake their heads. But what do they know? They are most likely diggin' on Kenny G! My one true fan is my faithful English Mastiff named "Arwen". She tilts her head to one side and gives me funny looks most of the time, but her tail always wags and I always get kisses after a song. Although, she has trouble with the high pitch sounds on "Echoes" that David does. She just looks at the speakers with a look of "What the hell is that ear piercing noise?!" Anywho...

Re: bands that do good covers

last time i checked, most cover bands dont sell millions and millions of albums of music that they wrote without the help of maistream radio stations or mtv.

dont diss phish man, saying you dont like the music is one thing but calling them a worthless cover band isnt fair.

if you havent heard a phish song or u have only heard a few i suggest you check out a few live songs, you never know, u might like it. i just dont like it when people say they dont like a band and havent actually heard any of their music and they dont like it becuz they heard from someone else that they suck.

but, this topic isnt about phish, its about bands that arent cover bands that do good covers.

Re: bands that do good covers

how do you know he hasn't heard a lot of phish. maybe his friend likes phish and every time he goes to his house he plays it. there are many other scenarios too. just because he doesn't like the same stupid ass band you like doesn't mean you should jump to conclusions.

Re: bands that do good covers

thats why i said IF you havent heard any of their music. i respect people's opinions on music, but only if they have heard music by the band they diss.

im sorry i just dont think its fair to call phish a worthless cover band. i mean they have been around sincec 1988 without like i said before, the help of radio or mtv, and on top of that, they put on their own tours.

stevie ray vaughn used to cover a lot of other peoples songs live and on his albums but if someone called stevie ray vaughn and double trouble a worthless cover band every one would think its unfair.

Re: bands that do good covers

I kinda like Pearl Jam's Interstellar Overdrive. Remembering that they are a rock band so of course it's not PF.

Re: bands that do good covers

That's actually an interesting question thorin! What would modern day music critics categorise PF into today? Just imagined they just came out with Piper in 2002. My guess would be maybe alternative? Yes? No?

Re: bands that do good covers

i think they would have their own sub category in the main rock category.

Re: bands that do good covers

no way would they be alternative. they would probably be in some revivalist/neo/trad sub genre.

Re: bands that do good covers

and i wasn't asking that question to start some new discussion. i meant it as a reply to your saying pearl jam was a rock band well so was pink floyd just in case you didn't catch that.
