Re: to burn...or not to burn.....

I would like to hear as many opinions as possible on this. All of us using the forum probably have cd burners and download songs off the internet. But i guess i'm one of the few (well we'll see) that still enjoys going out to a record shop and buying an album. See for me its not only about the CD, but i love the artwork and package that some bands go to the trouble of doing. In relation to PF music burners, the re-issued, re-mastered and re-pressed albums done in 1997 (which are the ones i have) have complete artworks and are simply beautiful, and were worth the $30 each i paid for them. I do burn mp3's, but it's mostly Top 40's singles that i might like but just wouldn't buy. Also rare live stuff that i can't buy, but i wouldn;t really want an album burned, especially if its a band i love. Whats your opinion?

Re: to burn...or not to burn.....

Personally Pedge, I buy everything offcially (not just Floyd stuff) and always have. The only stuff I have burned is rare/live stuff or backup copies of stuff (so I don't have to carry the originals with me and have them get ruined). I have a rather large music collection for my age (19), about 300 CD's and about 50 or so vinyl records. As you said, there are those people (a lot of them) who hardly ever buy anything and 90% of their music collection is CD-R copies. I think people who sit at their computer all day and download mp3s so they don't have to pay are lame, but that's just me.

Re: to burn...or not to burn.....

I buy the official releases as well. I also have a decent sized collection, and I can understand why people would just download their music. But I still prefer to get the official releases, with the sound quality they were meant to be heard in.

Re: to burn...or not to burn.....

The only albums I burn are the ROIOs that I download in SHN format. I don't burn MP3s, because of the quality loss.

As for official albums, if it's something I'd want, I'll go out and buy it.

On a side note, I'n looking to trade CDRs for original, factory pressed ROIOs. If anyone is interested, please contact me with what you're looking to get rid of. I'm most interested in soundboard shows and trance remixes, but I want other things as well. Here's my list of PF ROIOs for trade :

09.13.1967
07.12.1970 (2 discs)
10.04.1971
02.17.1972
03.08.1973
02.28.1980 + 02.01.1980 rehearsals (3 discs)
06.30.1990
06.11.1994 (2 discs)
Dark Side of the Moon DTS Mix
Wish You Were Here DTS Mix
RW - Westwood One Broadcast 1.22.02

Compressed WAVs. So are MP3s, but MP3s sacrifice quality (even if it's negligible at higher bit-rates)...they're a lossy format because they lose data. SHNs are quite a bit larger and can't really be played on a computer in that format (not as conveniently as MP3s, anyhow), but can be decompressed into WAVs without losing any quality at all. Good for trading bootlegs that you plan on burning before you hear.
