| Re: Saucerful at pompeii I have been watching my pompeii video continuously and have found that; The first half of saucerful of secrets is quite hard to listen to AND enjoy I find the following part irresitable and think its one of the best pieces of music ever composed: the cocophony mellows out and Rick brings in the organ all the way up to the songs climax with Dave's vocal conclusion but also Nick's drumming sends tingles down my spine and i often find i smile during the piece... anyone else find the first half of saucerful hard work but love the finale? anyone else agree that the pompeii versions of most of their older tracks rank higher than other live performances? |

| Re: Saucerful at pompeii I definitely agree with you. I love Saucerful but it tends to be a bit draggy. the "Celestial Voices" part that you mention is the best part.

| Re: Saucerful at pompeii I do believe that your watching this video "continously" is causing most of your symptomatology, including the auditory hallucinations, tingling spine, and hearing difficulties you describe. Here's my recommendation: turn off the VCR, go outside, take a deep breath of fresh air while standing in the sunshine, and find some real people to interact with. Then, when you re-re-re-view the video a few days from now, you may decide that -guess what?! - it's only a video! -Pink Anderson (just trying to be of service)

| Re: Saucerful at pompeii DDW, SoS is my least favourite early Floyd tune simply because of the cacophony in the first part, but indeed the gentle last section is most agreeable. And I'd also agree the Pompeii pieces outdo their studio versions, but only if one's piping the audio output to the hi-fi. Shine on! Byron

Well, well, well....you know, it's like that Animals album the Floyd recorded way back when: there are Pigs, there are Dogs, and of course there are Sheep. I try not to be one of the sheep. You may expect everyone else to stay "in the fold," but I prefer to roam around outside the pen. Isn't that what Roger would want me to do anyway ??? -Pink Anderson, etc., etc.

| Re: Saucerful at pompeii It's be awhile since i listened to Pompeii, but of course i do remember the end with Dave and Nick going wild and having fun. I love Saucerful for that, but i admit, i can't remember the whole thing.

| Re: Saucerful at pompeii Funny, but I always thought the cacophony in the middle was a lot of fun--but, of course, the best part is "Celestial Voices". The most beautiful version, though, comes from the Amsterdam 1969 bootleg. That is just beautiful beyond words!

| Re: Saucerful at pompeii What I find wrong with Saucerful at Pompeii is it was too much of a trip in the beginning and they play a good ending. Basically I say that this song doesnt match the meaning of Floyd. I find that this song should have never been played live. Ummagumma presents the better version in my opinion because it is lenghty which give all members time to improvise. _________________ |

| Re: Saucerful at pompeii On the video I like the first part more than the second part, just because it's a lot more interesting to watch and to hear. But on Ummagumma I like the second part a lot better. And then of course there's Saucerful of Secrets itself... I hate the song on there, it sounds terrible. I can't really explain why... I guess it's just not creative enough.

| Re: Saucerful at pompeii I love that part on Pompeii where Dave is in the studio laying down tracks on "Brain Damage" & makes his famous "feedback" comment. (Too bad those tracks didn't make it to the finished song--they were awesome!)Also, notice Roger droning on and on at the lunch-counter, argueing with someone about drivel, while Dave fights to keep awake.

| Re: Saucerful at pompeii Saucerful is a GREAT piece of *art* in my opinion. Celestial Voices is the best part of it, I mean is the part you can really enjoy, but it is a "concept song" and the different parts have different meanings. Live performances of ASOS are wonderful and the Pompeii one is one of the best I heard but not THE best.
