Re: The greatest musicians...?

Do you think that Dave, Roger, Nick and Rick were the best at playing their instrument, or where there better musicians than them? (pls dont base on opinions )

Re: The greatest musicians...?

Hmmmm...i can't really rate musciians because everyone has their own style. A good musician is someone who you can recognise without knowing if their playing. How would you rate if someone is better then our PF boys? Whats the criteria?

Re: The greatest musicians...?

Maybe not THE best, but I'm sure I could locate polls where Mr. Gilmour is among the top five frontmen.

Mr. Wright probably isn't the technical best, and from some things I've read, may not be so much of a classical pianist...but when he plays for the Floyd, he has an amazing ear for knowing exactly what works. His compositional skills are outstanding, of course, but that's separate from musical prowess. Mr. Wright (except during the time where there were extenuating circumstances) did not need anyone to cover for him in the studio. (The reason for multiple keyboardists in concert is no different than the reason for the presence of a rhythm guitarist, and should not be counted against him.)

Mr. Waters--Well...there's so much interview evidence of his having to have things done for him, either having his instrument tuned, or having other people play the bassline on albums, that certainly in his younger days he probably was not very competent. This may have improved with age, however...but BDG he is not, when it comes to technical competence.

Mr. Mason--I don't know a thing about how to judge drummers, so I'll leave this alone.

Re: The greatest musicians...?

of course there were better musicians but that is not all that counts. what counts is what you do with your instrument to make what you consider to be great music.

Re: The greatest musicians...?

I agree. For example lets say we start by comparing Dave to Edward Van Halen? Whose to say one is better then the other. Both have different styles and use their guitars to different use. It's like comparing chalk and cheese. Dave probably couldn't do fret work that Ed did, while Ed probably couldn't make a...well...a Dave sounding guitar.

He probably couldn't make the instrument TALK the way that Mr. Gilmour does. One could almost imagine that there are words implied in the playing...it sometimes has a weirdly voicelike quality.

Mr. Wright, too, does an excellent job of pure EXPRESSIVENESS in the instrument--and THAT is what makes him good.

Re: The greatest musicians...?

Dave is my favorite guitar player. He plays those emotional guitar solos (CN, time) better than anybody. For speed players I would go with Edward. But overall, no one can touch Dave.

Re: The greatest musicians...?

His work in "Marooned" almost makes it sound like a person crying and wailing in pain...

And the extended solo on the PULSE version of "Comfortably Numb" is beyond incredible...
