Re: Gilmour steals his own licks

I had Gilmour's 1st solo album and Pulse in my CD player on randomand heard 'Raise my Rent' and 'What Do You Want From Me?' back-to-back. I was struck by what I heard: Dave is stealing guitar licks from himself!!

Listen to Raise My Rent: 1:00 - 1:12
Then listen to Pulse version of 'WDYWFM': 0:20 - 0:32

Same lick, right?

(P.S. My wife says I'm way too into Floyd if I can pick that shit out.)

Yep. I noticed that a couple of years ago. I thought I was the only one who noticed. But I guess after 30+ years you might tend to forget what you've already done, or just don't care.

Re: Gilmour steals his own licks

We discussed this in the "Gilmour's first solo album thread", not that I care about it being repeated...just letting you know you are definitely not the only one who has noticed this. I realised it the day I bought Division Bell...and thought "Geez I must be into Floyd to pick this stuff up'!!!

I guess Gilmour thought it was such a nice lick that it shouldn't be wasted on an album that not many (comparatively) people will hear.

Driven:

Sorry to keep repeating you - I apologize for not reading all of the threads on this site before posting. I have noticed that you and I share many of the same like & dislikes as far as Floyd goes.

Re: Gilmour steals his own licks

No problem Terminalfrost. You got great taste buddy. Hell most of the people I know don't even like Pink Floyd...so it's refreshing to speak to Floyd fans, especially ones who like the same type of Floyd as me.

Re: Gilmour steals his own licks

Ever notice how Pros and Cons sounds an awful lot like The Wall, esp. Mother. Apparently this is a common occurence for the Floyd.

Re: Gilmour steals his own licks

yeah, i read that Waters wrote pros and cons and the wall around the same time and proposed both of them to PF and the ended up deciding to do the wall as an album and rog released pros and cons after he left floyd.

i read that in the Is There Anybody Out There booklet if anybody wants to read it.

Re: Gilmour steals his own licks

Actually, I think Rog released Pros and Cons in 1984, and he left the band in 1985. Not that it matters or anything.

Re: Gilmour steals his own licks

Yeah, but he WROTE it at the same time as he wrote the Wall...and took both of them to the band and said "pick one", and we all know what they picked...so he released Pros and Cons at a later date, and as a solo project.

"just thought you'd like to know"

Re: Gilmour steals his own licks

I actually knew that, Driven. My comment was directed at guitarmangreg, who said that Roger released Pros and Cons after he left Pink Floyd. Which he didn't. As he was still officially with Pink Floyd.

Re: Gilmour steals his own licks

Don't a lot of bands reuse licks and things of such if they sound good, if something sounds wicked whynot use it again its like reusing steps in dance.

cheers
