| Re: Fat Old Sun: Best Version? Pink Floyd's live versions, of course. Certainly not the Gilmour-plays-drums studio cut from Atom Heart Mother, which is pretty inept, or the all-acoustic Meltdown arrangement (which suffers from not having a big rockin' Telecaster solo), or anything Guy Pratt has been anywhere near. | Re: Fat Old Sun: Best Version? I love both the Live In Gdansk and Remember That Night versions....(and the Peel Sessions version, but I'll put that aside.) I was bitterly disappointed when I bought the DG in Concert DVD and the damned song ended without the, as Botley put it, big rockin' Tele outro solo, which for me is about 98% of the song's appeal. I complained noisily on this very site about Big Dave shortchanging us FOS lovers and would like to think that my small voice along with the multitudes of others burnt off about it had a small part in convincing Dave to redo the song right. Anyway, back to the poll, I finally decided to go with the Gdansk version because it's big rockin' Tele solo lasts about 31 seconds longer. Last edited by stratman; 01-08-2010 at 11:30 PM. |

Re: Fat Old Sun: Best Version? Why put the "Peel Sessions" aside? They're masterpieces, exceeding in many cases the Floyd's studio LPs for sheer musicianship. Actually, I'd take the 1971 renditions of "Embryo" over any version of "Fat Old Sun", really.

Re: Fat Old Sun: Best Version? Because I've lost my old scratchy bootleg recording of it. I haven't heard it for years and am not able at this moment to compare it directly to the other versions.

Re: Fat Old Sun: Best Version? If we are including unofficial releases as well, personally I like the version done at the Lisner Auditorium, Washington D.C. show in 1971.

Re: Fat Old Sun: Best Version? Well smack me around and call me Susan! Then a friend of mine who is several years older than me 'discovered' Pink Floyd around the time of one of those noughties David Gilmour concert videos and he was raving about how great this song called "Fat Old Sun" was and I thought that was pretty cool because I always thought it was a nice tune with that 'tele' solo at the end. So he showed me the video and I played him the album. As a result, there was confusion all around. The stupid bastard REALLY didn't like the album version and I couldn't grasp the DG live version. So we had a beer and watched the new DVD version of P.U.L.S.E..![]() I am a self described 'genius of everything' so I think I'm probably right about this. Yeah, that's it.

Re: Fat Old Sun: Best Version? The version that will always stand out for me was indeed on a Gilmour concert video. The DVD is called "A Night with David Gilmour" He's on a round stage surrounded by amazing musicians.
