Re: madcap laughts-opinions

I would definitely recommend madcap to anyone interested in syd. In my opinion it's his best solo work. It's especially interesting when you listen to it knowing that most of the songs would likely have been pink floyd songs had he not gone mad. At the same time it's sort of a sad album because thru all the stutters and screw ups you can still hear genius shining thru. And its a hell of a lot more coheshive of an album than "barrett" (with the exeption of gigolo aunt, which is probobly my fav sid song). Well, theres a few good songs on barrett. Anyway, definitely buy that album i garuntee you'll like it.

Re: madcap laughts-opinions

OK guys, I'll save you the repeat thread, and use this one.

I just bought The Madcap Laughs on CD, about 4 days ago. And when I first heard it, I thought it was a mess. But it's grown on me quite a bit.

Anyway, here's my two cents. I regret the fact that Malcolm Jones ever let Gilmour and Waters produce the rest of it. I believe that if Malcolm Jones had stayed on producing it, it would have turned out a great record, without the out-of-tune singing. But I heard 'Dark Globe' and shuddered. I have another take of this song on my PC, and it's great - no bad singing or out-of-beat guitar playing. But the album version... yeck!!!I can dig the fact that Syd was going through some hard times when this record was made... but I hear none or little bad playing (and singing) on the tracks Malcolm Jones produced.

And I'm quite shocked that a former bandmate (and friend) of Syd's could let him release songs that are done that bad.

That being said, Gilmour and Waters did produce some of the better songs on the album (Octopus, Long Gone, Golden Hair). But I like the material Malcolm Jones produced better (Love You, Here I Go, No Good Trying).

I dunno. My two cents.

Re: madcap laughts-opinions

i only bought madcap, opel and barrett as they were going cheap, and i thought they would look nice on my shelf. when i first listened to them i couldnt help but feel they were a waste of money, but it turned out i was wrong. syd barretts genius shines through, then it blinds you. sure some of the stuff is a little rough, see shanes post, and maybe they could be improved on, but as they stand they are far better than almost everything.
