Re: Poetic analysis of "Time"

That is some deep shit you are asking about, althought the song is interesting, now that i have actually looked over the lyrics to the songs I think it would be easier to analyze the song on a paragraph or whatever they are called in musical terms. There seems to be continuity throught out each paragraph. However if you want it sentence by sentence Knock yourself out. Also i am sure the lyric could be interpreted numerous ways, every person thinks differently even we floydians! but have fun I am not sure i want to boggle my mind that much

p.s. is there away i can figure out how to do more of these smilies, i am rather facinated by them

Re: Poetic analysis of "Time"

Line by line!?!?!?!

Jeepers in my very own words, ease up turbo!
Honestly why would you want sentence by sentence analysis, the song is fairly self explanatory and there is no extremely deep meaning to it, clever lyrics, yes! Really why try and anylise it line by line? You can over anylize a good thing. But like Barrett fan said if u want to knock youreslf out and go for it!

Oh and Barrett fan, the "paragraph" is called a verse and you can find out more about the smilys at the FAQ section of the site, hope that helps mate.

cheers

Re: Poetic analysis of "Time"

Floyd is great, but I don't see "Time" showing up in any Norton Anthologies anytime soon. Much as I like the song, I'm not sure how it would stack up to Wordsworth or Byron or Eliot or folks like that.

Re: Poetic analysis of "Time"

I think you should figure it out yourself, that is half the fun.

By the way, it ain't Shakespeare, it shouldn't be that hard.

"Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind."--Tool, Lateralus. Excellent album for those of you open minded enough to listen to something besides Floyd.

Re: Poetic analysis of "Time"

I say that time is a very deep song indeed, but i think that the song breathe is just as poetic or deep as that.

Re: Poetic analysis of "Time"

I've never felt the need to analyse, I enjoy the music for what it is without having to look around for deep and hidden meanings in the lyrics. However having said that, if that's your thing then go for it girlfriend!

Re: Poetic analysis of "Time"

its funny you should say that Breathe is just as deep and poetic as Time, because Roger thouht that the lyrics were far to simple, even childish, but Syd told him to never throw away lyrics like that.

Re: Poetic analysis of "Time"

I guess no one wants to take a crack at it. Pansies! I'll take 'er on one-handed!! HERE GOES NOTHIN!!! GAAAAAAARRRRRRRGH!!!!!!

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
The person described in the song is young. They are bored by the routine of school and day-to-day life.
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
The young person is trying to avert boredom by "wasting time"... doing things which have no meaning, and little point, but which pass the time and temporarily alleviate the boredom.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown
The person doesn't attempt to travel or see the world, they stay where they are and this contributes to the boredom.
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
The person is convinced that "Prince[ss] Charming", someone infinitely more exciting than them, will one day show up and cure the boredom and give meaning to their life. However, the person makes no attempt to seek this person out, they merely sit around and wait for this fantasy to happen to them. Alternately, they could be waiting for a "big break" which never happens. Again, they don't chase it, they just assume that if they wait long enough, it will happen no matter what.
Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
The young person does not realize that these things which seem boring now are only going to happen once, and if they don't enjoy it now they will never get a chance to again.
And you are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
The person realizes that there are grander things they could be doing, but right now they've got their whole life to do them, so why bother?
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
Suddenly, the young person is older. They are off to work. They wonder what happened to their childhood. They thought they new boredom before, but they are only beginning to scratch the surface of how dull everyday life can be.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
They are confused. How were they supposed to know that childhood would be over so soon? They are angry that they didn't realize they were supposed to enjoy childhood while they could before they had to grow up and join adult society.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
The older, middle-aged person tries to recapture their youth as best they can, but they never succeed.
And racing around to come up behind you again
They are frustrated that whatever they do to relive those moments is a pointless exercise.
The sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older
Nothing around them seems to have changed, but they themselves are changing.
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
They realize that they are mortal, and that they become weaker and weaker with each passing moment. This shocks and saddens them. They thought life was long when they were young, but they now realize it is too short.
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Time seems to pass faster and faster now, as opposed to when it seemed to crawl along when they were young. They inadvertently find themselves surrounded by things to do, and they don't have the strength or free time to do what they like anymore.
Plans that either come to nought, or half a page of scribbled lines
They have delusions of doing something with their lives, but they blew the only chance they had. Now, anything they try seems to be pointless and there's nothing they can do about it.
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
They are incredibly sad about the way their life has turned out, but they stay alive regardless. They are so used to waiting that they can't do anything but desperately cling to whatever little comfort they have left.
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say
Their life is almost at an end. They are startled that nothing they ever did came to anything at all. They sink further into madness.
