I guess my question is how do people come up with words and lines for songs. Some songs like Syds seem to wander from Line to line but yet in the end they are telling a story and make sense? How does he do that, I mean everyone is different so I am sure there is not one best way. Roger Waters on the VH1 legends said that he learned from Syd to just keep whatever he wrote down because no matter how silly it could always turn into something great. What advice does anyone have? Understand I am just looking for opinions, ideas and whatnot, cause it is something that I have always wondered about

i don't think anyone can really tell you how to write songs, its whatever best suits you. I find short stories and things of such much easier to write, I'm not really all that good with songs and poems... But seriously if you just find what rocks your boat things should be easy. cheers

Just sit down and try. The more you write, the better you get at expressing yourself.

Writitng songs just has to come naturally. You can't force yourself to write something or it won't come.

Write down everything, no matter how absurd it is. Once you get all the crap out of your system, your bound to come up with something decent.

Also it has to do with how your words fit around the music, it doesn't work the other way around, believe it or not. And most songs sound better if they don't rhyme (if you listen to almost anything Tool, they don't rhyme). In my opinion, having to rhyme gets in the way of a good idea.

Rubbish! Rhyme can be sublime "Money! Get back. I'm alright Jack, keep your hands off my stack."

Rhyme can also be evil, dastardly, vicious, sticky, pugnacious, empty, void, devilish, inane, and facitious (sp?). Fortunatly for you, I'm too lazy to find a time when rhyme (hah) is all the above.

Sometimes, IF rhyme appears spontaneously, I will use it. And that HAS happened sometimes. Odd as it may sounds, it's most likely to occur when I'm writing "lyrics" to an instrumental.
