To be perfectly honest, who really cares? They were made weren't they? They were written we know, at the very least, by somebody, and they are good songs. So let's just enjoy the feel of it and forget about who did what!

Love,
`me`

On "One of These Days", Roger came up with the bass line while playing with Dave's delay effects. Dave added the doubling track, then the Lap Steel part that we all love. Nick did some gimmickry with his voice for the lyrics. All four are credited.

And, of course, Rick swiped the keyboard bit from the Dr Who theme. j/k

Seriously, though... do you actually think someone sat down and wrote out all those crazy improvised bits on Overdrive? NO FRUGGIN WAY.

how do you copyright that? i've heard that you can't copyright music through audio. but that person could have been wrong.

There are 2 components of recorded music that you can copyright: the song itself, and the performance itself. When you copyright a single recorded performance of a song (usually it's technically a patent, not a copyright), you protect everything... every single inflection, every mixing level, and any changes thereof constitute a different performance. When you copyright the song only, you protect the notes and chords, not the audio. You can do this with a loose jam like Interstellar Overdrive, too, because it does have some structure, but it doesn't hold up as well in court if someone nicks the awesome solo you did at one particular performance.

Question .

I heard that the voice was Roger cutting up different pieces of sound from a radio announcer that he really hated, or was that for something else?

A Short History Of OotD:

See, what happened was that the Floyd used the radio announcer's voice for the early versions of OotD. The announcer was Jimmy Young, and the Floyd didn't like him (or maybe just Roger...) so, before they would play the track live, they would play a cut-up tape collage of Jimmy Young, babbling away...
I heard they later did the same thing when opening "Raving and Drooling"... am I right?
