I know that many people LOVE bootlegs and really get a kick out of listening to live or different versions of songs. I still think that 'sometimes' they MAY ruin the appreciation of the original piece.

I know I'm probably gonna get bashed by ROIO lovers but I really think that the original studio recordings have a bigger value, both artistically and musically because this is how the band wanted the song to be like after 'looong hours of planning and group contributions'. I know that sometimes live performances capture more 'feeling', maybe sometimes a spark or a bit of magic.

BUT, to me 'raving and drooling' and 'you gotta be crazy' KINDA-SORTA ruined my 'personal appreciation' of sheep and dogs. Man how I used to relax and listen to those songs... then I got pissed off when I listened to those ROIO's a couple of times, and then listened to animals again and found that I began drawing similarities, even comparing them, and they are not THAT disimilar. So, basically I can't sit down and listen to 'Animals' like I used to, a kidn of nostalgia kicks in when I remember how I used to fell. I still LOOOVE it, but, it's different.

Don't get me wrong, I love bootlegs, live recordings, rare versions, etc. But every once in a while your 'appreciation' changes (Sometimes in a good way) toward the worst.

Would like to hear what you guys think, Thanks!

Well...I never liked "Sheep". So nothing was ruined by being introduced to "Raving and Drooling"!

personally i like live albums a lot. i have many live albums and burned live stuff and bootlegs. to me that is what music is. performing in front of people. if you can impress them on stage then you've accomplished what you set out to do.

I've never gotten that feeling before. I always look at bootlegs and see the creative process. Being a musician myself rather than seeing a tarnished version of a classic,I just see the coal that became a diamond. Admitedly I havn'nt heard many floyd bootlegs (though I do have a tasty 1972 recording of Dark Side, not real great quality, but it's neat cause it's got a slower tempo to alot of songs, and some differences like Speak To Be being gone, but having a kind of cool way to start Breathe, instead of On The Run it's got kinda a little jam,it's got the evangelists sound clips instead of Claire on what slightly resembles Great Gig).

Now what would ruin something for me is a remix that comes out and changes everything. Like Limp Bisquick's Old New Songs (though I don't like that so that dosn't piss me off). Imagine the horror of a P. Dookie (or whatever he's calling himself these days) doing a remix of Dark Side. With J.Ho,I mean J.Lo on vocals on Great Gig. *puking and wretching painful souds* Thank God that would never happen with the permission of the Floyd =D

don't even get me started with remixes, they totally trash the experience. Hence, like everything else, 'some' remixes are better than the originals or build on them, like in dance music.
But... floyd is quite another thing. I know it's a matter of taste, but I just can't get into the new pink floyd trance songs, I can't remember the DJ or group's name.

Are you thinking of the Orb remixes?

Which begs the question of why they felt a need to do a trance remix of "Runaway". Isn't the original "techno" enough??? (Don't get me wrong...I like the original. I just think the Orb ruined it.)

Uh, back to the bootleg topic, I have noticed that at times when bands perform live, they are free to stretch out, and expand parts of the song that you don't get on the album. That is why I love jam bands like Phish, and even Floyd did this, who experiment on stage.

I've got a bootleg of the Animals tour, and althought the quality is a little shot, the version they do of Pigs (three different ones) is better IMO than the album. Like NNJ said, they've expanded on the song and do some lengthy jams / guitar bits. Awesome. After hearing that, I have changed to the pigs-is-better-than-dogs camp.

Good news, I'm warming up with 'raving and drooling' and 'you gotta be crazy. Still, of course, I preffer the versions on animals. Let's just say I appreciate them more both. I can totally agree with the fact that bootlegs and live performances really expand on th experience and are played with more life and soul. Still, I would like to know if anybody has the 'Azimuth Coordinator' bootleg, and tell us what he thinks of it, and especially the songs from tha animals album that are played.
See ya around, every stranger's eyes!

For me, Raving and Drooling and You Gotta Be Crazy don't differ very much from Sheep and Dogs, except for the live feeling and experimentation. Anyone who has ever played live knows the difference between playing in a studio and in front of many people!

funny

about 2 hours after reading the post and replys on this subject, i put animals on and immediatley after the first verse of Dogs i got a bootleg version in my head of something Ric would do that is not on the studio. I then took Animals out and put the '77 Montreal show in my cd player. I have to admit, i like that show alot better than the studio.

RoIo's are great for someone like myself: Too damn young to have seen/heard the Boys in all their glory. This gives someone like myself to put a boot in the cd player, put on some headphones(or just turn it up really loud!!!) and imagine you are there in 1975 as Richard starts to play the beginning of Shine On, and the crowd goes nuts!!! Gives me chills everytime. I've got quite a bit of RoIO's (I'm now up to 94) but I'd glady give them up if The Powers That Be would release live shows "officially" from all of their tours over the years. Not some "greatest hits" album.
