They recorded a song together called 'What a shame Mary Jane', I downloaded it a while ago and find it oddly interesting, even though extremely inaudible at times, and I don't dare play it at a loud volume level. But it's still a curio piece. Does anyone want to share info. on that particular song or on the odd colaboration of Barrett with Paul, John, Ringo and George? Thanks!

That's for sure a mistake. In my condition of an absolute Beatles fan, I can say that "What's The New Mary Jane" (that's the song's name) had no collaboration from Syd. It was recorded in late 1968 (Syd wasn't around EMI...), and the band just desisted of it. This song can be found in Beatles Anthology 3, a double CD set containing outtakes, new songs and other rarities.

OK, my mistake, the song is almost unlistenable anyway. So, I'm listening right now to vegetable man, what do you guys think about it. I think that along with Scream thy last scream, these are the two syd-floyd songs that Gilmour holds that really deserve recognition. What do you think?

See ya around southampton dock!

Lightbulb

I found this on the net:

WHAT'S THE NEW MARY JANE / WHAT A SHAME MARY JANE
John Lennon, the Beatles 1968

'What the New Mary Jane' was an unreleased Beatles song untill the release of Beatles Anthology 3. An early version was titled 'What's a Shame Mary Jane'. Beatles and Pink Floyd were both recording in the Abbey Road Studios and it sounds like Syd Barrett had more than a little influence on this song.

I just downloaded What A Shame Mary Jane, and while it definitely sounds like something that Syd would have written I cannot hear him anywhere on it. It is though one of the trippiest, and scariest, things I have ever heard the Beatles do.

it is a VERY weird song but damn good. i remember when i first heard it i though it had ended and that the odd middle part was another song (i was half listening) but then it came back with john saying "what a shame mary jane" over and over and i was surprised that it was still the same song. another odd beatles song is "you know my name (look up the number)"
