Re: "Paul is dead man, miss him, miss him, miss him..."

The title is actually words spoken by John Lennon at the end of the song "I'm So Tired" from the White Album played backwards...if you're familiar with it, you know, the mumbling at the end. I'd be glad to send it if I can work it out as such.

I just recently looked into the rumor mill about Paul McCartney being dead but heard about it from a friend around a year ago. I went onto the various sites and checked all the clues, and they seemed to have worked out. As far as I know the whole thing started around '66 and actually culminated when Paul had a press conference stating he was, in fact, not dead. I found the whole mirror trick for Sgt Pepper's especially creepy. You take a mirror directly across the Sgt. Pepper's base drum and the line reads (album with the reflection) "I ONE I X HE ^ DIE". The two Roman numeral one's and the spelled out "one" with an X represents the four Beatles (well, three) with the departed Paul (X). Then the words 'he' with an arrow pointing directly to Paul above, and then "Die". Pretty creepy. I believe he's live and well but it's still intriguing to think why they did it? Better publicity? I was just curious what you all thought about it or even if you remembered it from the era.

Love From the Underside,
`Me`

Re: "Paul is dead man, miss him, miss him, miss him..."

OK, I'm a Beatles fan since I was 3, so I've had quite enough of this Paul is dead rumor.
But, gotta admit it is indeed quite fun, and I have had some good time with the vynil edition of White Album myself, making it go backwards after I'm So Tired to hear that sentence...

About the Sgt Pepper bass drum thing, well, it's true that the line reads that, but it's quite inevitable... I mean, that would happen anyway if you write LONELY HEARTS in capital letters, and I also think that the stuff about I ONE I X meaning really soething doesn't seem that logical to me.
And anyway, we all know that the rumor was started on purpose by an american dj during his radio show back in '69 if I remember correctly.
Other evidences would have been the writing OPD over Paul's uniform sleeve, also from Pepper, which would allegedly mean "officially pronounced dead".
This was proven wrong, too, as the writing was in fact OPP (Ontario Police -uhm- something...) but in the picture looked like OPD b/c the patch was only half-visible.
And then there is the cover of Abbey road, with the license plate on the white volkswagen on the right reading "28 IF", meaning that Paul would have been 28 IF he was alive... but, again, this was proven wrong by the simple fact that Sir McCartney, having been born in '42, was 27, and not 28!
Also on the same cover, you have Paul walking barefoot, as people were buried according to the celtic tradition, John dressed in white, representing the priest, Ringo in black, the undertaker's business man, and George in worker's blue jeans, representing the grave digger, all taking part in the funeral procession.
Actually the only reason why Paul was barefoot is because he just lived down the street, so that morning he had come to the studio in sandals, and they thought the sandals wouldn't really look that good on the album cover.
The other three were simply sporting their favorite clothing styles at the time.

Hope this helped.

Cheers

Oh, by the way, which one's pink?

Very informative, Above (I've forgotten your name already...actually I'm laying, I didn't read your handle). I just thought it would be interesting to bring up.

How about this one...speaking of archaic rumor mills...you guys believe in OZ/Dark Side...or any of the others for that matter, WYWH/It's a Wonderful Life, Division Bell/Planet of the (those damn dirty) Apes, or so on and so forth?

I was around during that "Paul-is-dead" hysteria-fest. Another thing I remember is Paul was the Walrus on MMTour cover--the walrus being a sign of death to eskimos, or some such crap... Paul might as well have died, cause he didn't do anything worth a damn post-beatles...Wings sucked...Probably Linda's fault. Come to think of it, the Beatles distentigrated because of WOMEN. What was Mark David Chapman thinking?? He could have been a hero if he'd shot Yokel ONo instead...Stupid bastard.

John Lennon already said something along those lines in his song from imagine (the album not the soundtrack) "how do you sleep" where he says "those freaks was right when they said, you were dead".

DId you guys forget that the Beatles were nothing more than a glorified boy band. They did nothing of substance until SGT Pepper's, and then that was it, nothing they did since was any good.

wait I retract my statement if the guy had shot Yoko then all John would have done was write songs about her and his loss of her which while they might have been good, well wait look who they would have been about, we are better off this way

they may have been a boy band (which they couldn't change seeing as how they were all boys) but they made good songs and played their instruments. i'm not a fan of their early stuff from their early era (did i lose you?) but the later stuff like rubber soul and revolver were great stepping stones to sgt peppers. thats all i have to say.

Re: "Paul is dead man, miss him, miss him, miss him..."

Well said thorin13, and let's not forget the post-sgt. Pepper albums... it's not like NNJ said, "and that was it" (and anyway had they only released Sgt. Pepper, they would deserve their place in history nevertheless), MMT might not be a masterpiece (still it was only a double EP in its original release, and anyway it featured gems like I Am The Walrus), but what came next?

The WHITE ALBUM ladies & gentleman!!! The double LP par excellence! I dare anyone to trash this record...

Oh, and that really wasn't it neither, although the 4 lads weren't getting along quite well anymore (actually very close to hating each other :sad, they still managed to record the Get Back sessions (later to resurface in the form of the Phil Spector-produced Let it Be) and yet one more masterpiece, Abbey Road (one of my 3 favorite fab 4 records, the other 2 being Revolver and White Album). Then Let it Be came out to the disappointment of many, but it wasn't really that bad in retrospective. Great songs in there, too, actually, the overall result is a bit disturbing 'cause you can really hear the tension and frustrations, but come on, Two of Us, Dig a Pony, Let It Be, Across the Universe...

Well, I apologize for the lenght of my post, but sometimes I just can't stop!!!

Cheers everybody.

Oh, by the way, which one's pink?
