Re: Gilmour Vs. Page

Well i think that Jimmy Page is a real good guitarist player, but Dave´s style and playing is what really makes me feel like being on a stairway to heaven.
That´s why my choice as the best guistarist between both of them is David Gilmour.

Re: Gilmour Vs. Page

Gilmour for me. Gilmour is probably my fav of all time. Page has come up with many many great riffs, but his solos just don't do it for me. Oh well.

Re: Gilmour Vs. Page

Though I have great respect for Gilmour's vocal and songwriting abilities, I must regretfully hand the better guitarist award to Page.

Jimmy Page explored a lot more styles than Dave Gilmour in his life. From heavy blues, to British folk, American folk, ska, pop, etc. while our favorite David Eatmore stuck with the same style (and scales), often copying his own solos, even after the departure of Roger.

If you had done research on Led Zeppelin, you would know that not all their songs are filled with 5 min solos "while the band just stands about". You would also have known that STH is not their best track. Have a listen to "Ten years gone", "over the hills and far away", "D'yer M'ker", "Fool in the rain". There are also plenty of folk songs that Jimmy tried his hands at such as "Gallows Pole" and "Tangerine".

I am not forcing my opinion on anyone; I simply dislike people talking about something they know nothing of.

Re: Gilmour Vs. Page

Just because Page doesn't bend the hell out of notes doesn't mean he's not an expressive guitarist. The Rain Song, Thank You, Tangerine, Stairway to Heaven, No Quarter, Since I've Been Loving You, Ten Years Gone, there's a lot of feeling and atmosphere in his arpeggio and chord work that many can't get through bending notes. And just because he plays fast most of the time doesn't mean that's not self-expressive. That's his way of expression and he was the first to play like that.

As much as Zeppelin supposedly ripped off other artists, tell me, who else could write songs Achilles Last Stand, Kashmir, The Rover, No Quarter, Stairway to Heaven, Immigrant Song, etc.? How often would you hear songs of that callibre from other artists?

Re: Gilmour Vs. Page

Jimmy page does a great heavy rock/blues thing, hes sloppy, hes fast,he can definatly jam out.
David Gilmour is also fabulous at the heavy rock/blues thing, but he has more feeling to his music,he plays the slide/steel guitar way better,is slower when it comes to all out fastness, but is way more precise, and once agian I feel the emotion in the music. There are only a couple Zep tunes I can feel emotion(and not just rocking out feeling, sadness, angst, suffering). But with Floyd I get that with most all the music. And to me thats what its all about, that said I own all zep and floyd cd's,and I love them both for very diffrent reasons.

Re: Gilmour Vs. Page

I'd say Page probably has more technical skill but Gilmour's ability to just use really simple bits and compose them in such a way that they are full of emotion means he wins it for me.

Re: Gilmour Vs. Page

Oddly enough, I think Gilmour is actually the more talented and is better. So, Page can play faster, but if someone hasn't played piano or guitar, they sit down and just move their fingers really quickly (like it's gunna work), but they do. A talented guitarist or pianist would be the one who plays slower.
