only thing I would reiterate is that Gilmour is far more precise than Page. And is music really about being the hardest or the fastest?

Neither. I just believe that Page had more range and skill.

I think Gilmour is a such a better guitar player. Don't get me wrong but Page doesn't have the type of skill that Gilmour has.

Well, anyone can practice alot (I'm not saying anyone can be Jimmy Page) and be able to play fast and have good technique. But not everyone can make the guitar sing like Gilmour could. I'm sure if David Gilmour tried to play like Page he could, but I don't know if Page could play Gilmour's style.

with jimmy page and david gilmour you need to look at it like miles davis and dizzy gilespe

David Gilmour=Miles Davis. they both sing throught their instrument making euphoric sounds

Jimmy Page=Dizzy Gilespe, they play high fast and show major technique

in conclusion its pretty futile debating this theyre both great guitarists in their own way

I have to strongly disagree. Page can play faster, but he's sloppier, Gilmour is slower and plays what needs to be played. Now, who do I like better? Zeppelin, so I like Page more. But only by a little on both accounts.

My fav. guitarists in order are as follows. . .

1.Jimmy Page 9.3/10
2.David Gilmour 9.2/10
3.Joe Walsh 9.0/10

I agree, Page simply plays faster while Dave is more accurate and clean, more musical in my opinion.

Re: Gilmour Vs. Page

well they both have different styles for sure but i think Jimmy Page is the best guitarist ever. If both of them were given the same effects and pedals and junk and amps, i think Page would sound alot better. I mean did you ever listen to White Summer/Black Mountain Side!? its freakin amazing! i can't even move my hand that fast!

Re: Gilmour Vs. Page

there will always be a debate in the rock music history about who is a the better guitarist , I just want to focus on 2 points :

1- yes, page is faster and sloppier and he's without a doubt the greatest in WHAT HE DOES, he's better skilled , Gilmour is more melodic and plays the right note at the right moment of the song at the best way he knows how , PLUS .. he uses the best-fit distortion for every song he plays. that didn't strike me with anyone as it did with dave.

2-i've been hearing "since i've been loving you" and "confortumbly numb" since forever .. i never get bored of CN and i can always hear it at any mood i'm in , I'm in the solos for both sensation and creativity which are both deleiverd beautifuly by Dave THAN Page.

Re: Gilmour Vs. Page

I've been playing guitar since 1976. those are my credentials for weighing in here.
They both had different visions:'69-'79

Gilmour joined a band and added colour to the team's efforts.
Page formed a band to pursue his singular vision and the others were there to colour HIS vision.
So to me, Gilmour was a guitar player and part time song writer.
Page was a composer, producer, experimentalist and part time guitar player.

I think their reasons for playing, or their goals, were different. Gilmour liked playing the guitar and doing his bit for the album.
Page liked creating bodies of work and it just so happened that he played guitar as well.
John Paul Jones was a master arranger and multi instrumentalist but he worked FOR Page.

Gilmour developed a style of his own that he then uses in the scenarios he finds himself in, whether its a PF album or McCartney or Supertramp...
Page had to put something on those songs he and the boys came up with and sometimes it's 'sloppy' or rushed, or awkward sounding.IMO

Jimmy Page is a Blues guitarist.
David Gilmour is his own genre.
They both do love their instrument but I think for different reasons. For different purposes.

I have to say that this over simplifies the facts somewhat but I think that this is the very basic truth.

So,,,, who's the best? Probably the guy from The Bay City Rollers.
