Er, Gilmour is better, of course.

1.) Does it matter . . . no
2.) Both play distinctly different styles that you cannot compare
3.) there is no third one . . .

They are both excellent guitarists, but so different that a comparison is not worth it. Jimmy Page is a very 'sloppy' guitarist. Thats his style, and if you ever hear the BBC sessions, ots mre evident. I dont use sloppy as an insult, its just looser. I heppen to like David Gilmour's better, because his solos, and music is very focused, but he still can jam, and do whatever he likes. Jimmy Page does not have a focused approach like that.

I agree with every post on this thread so far. The age-old question of "who's the best guitarist..." will always create a firestorm of debate when posed. There is no answer, of course, because there are so many definitions of what "best" means, and many other variables, and it is SO SUBJECTIVE. It's like asking who's the best-looking girl?

One thing I'll say, though, I listen to a lot of different guitarists, but I NEVER get tired of listening to Dave Gilmour.

I don't mean to sound contentious, but I honestly didn't think that Dave was in the running for Guitar God. I mean, he's good, and I love Floyd, but I wouldn't pick him to go in any top-five list.

Oh, and that part about not meaning to sound contentious was a rat-faced lie.

thats because all of this is subjective and more often than not today's top guitarists list are based on who can play 15,500,991 notes per second more than anything...

in my opinion there are too many prodigies out there who think playing guitar means "shredding"

we should have just let shredding die like the rest of the 80's (unless someone can do it tastefully and melodicly like eric johnson, via, or satch).

While I agree with what you said (for the most part), that wasn't what I meant in my earlier post. In reference to "Guitar Gods" I was thinking of Clapton, Hendrix, King, Santana, Vaughn, etc., none of whom fit into the "shredding" category, at least not in my opinion.

Of course, I realize the subjectivity of such a matter, and that any definitive statements made by members of this board can and will be torn apart by other members of the board. However, I don't believe that discussion boards must consist solely of facts swapped between users; rather, a forum such as this is an ideal place for an exchange of opinions and alternating views, in which case subjectivity is embraced.

Please don't take this as a rebuttal; its intention was far different. I am merely commenting on your comment.

I'm not trying to pick on you BarretFan. But everything I've read has told me that Gilmour and Page both play in the blues style. Therefore, you can compare them. So I'm going to have to agree with Hobbstweedle when he made the sloppy/focused comparison. Right on brother.

Going back to the original question I would have to choose DG. Not because I subjectively prefer his sound/style but for the fact that if I were to shell out $ for a live performance I know I will get my money's worth from DG and the same has not always been true with regard to Mr. Page.

Let's compare the two trademark songs, CN and Stairway. Stairway wins handsdown, but since I feel that CN is a bunch of bunk, quite boring without ROg's lyrics actually, let's compare Echoes to Stairway, Echoes wins. But if Page and Eatmour, oops I mean Gilmour, were to have a battle of the bands, with just them, no other bandmates, who would win, I don't know. But I do know that I enjoy listening to both of the bands that they are in.

Well i do aggree with this interpretation however Page is the forerunner to heavy metal and Gilmour is anything but Heavy metal. that is where i was coming from with my opinion.

I see where your coming from brother. Thank you for clarifying that.

..................

IMO, the solo in Stairway is WAY too overated. If anything, Eruption should've been the #1 rock and roll guitar solo of all time. [cant think of the magazine it was in right now]
.................

"Eatmour" -your a genious, NNJ!
