Well, if you want my honest opinion...I've just herd about this ET thing by clicking on this link, seems like just an add-on too the rumour about The Dark Side Of The Rainbow.

After watching Wizard of Oz synchronization, I do believe this is planned, based on my own observations, regardless, if I was Roger Waters or Gilmour, if I had done something like so, I would have stopped then, since I'm going to deny the fact of doing so(according to my theory, that is), and not continue with more movies, because it would make it alot more obvious that something is going on here.

Besides, it's probably just concidental, I had Ummagumma playing once while flipping channels on the TV, and I came to Back To The Future Episode II, and right when Biff pointed the gun at McFly, the drum roll that had been going on stopped; doesn't mean anything really, just a funny concidence. The only reason I believe in the Wizard of Oz synch is because of alot more evidence based on observations, like the clocks tolling of 'Time', right when that one mean old woman, who turns at to be the witch within "time" is shown for the first time.

Not to burst your bubble, but if it was "planned", which we have no evidence that it was, it was planned poorly. For every one thing that does match-up, 300 things don't. Our brains are just wired to notice the things that do. Anyway, coincidental or not, I found it entertaining, but that was then.

I agree with you... in every instance BUT Echoes/2001. Dark Side of the Rainbow, BestOfFloyd/ET and the rest rely on happenstance visual connections with changes in the music... which are total coincidences. You can't possibly intentionally edit those into a song, certainly not with 1970's equipment.

Now Echoes/2001, on the other hand... There is a MASSIVE difference between this and other "syncs", because they match up both temporally (not exactly, which would be impossible and coincidental, but close enough to be more than a coincidence) and THEMATICALLY.

It wouldn't have been hard at all for Roger Waters to say "Okay, 2001's about space exploration and evolution. I'll write some lyrics about that." These were later changed (from "planets meeting face to face" on early live performances to the familiar "overhead the albatross") because he was tired of Pink Floyd being labelled a "space rock" band. But the basic idea (each verse being about the past, present and future of human evolution) remained the same.

Now Roger gets this crazy idea to go into an ordinary movie theatre and time how long certain scenes in 2001 last. Miraculously, the key scene in the film is 23 minutes long which is just about how much music the Floyd were willing to squeeze into one side of an LP in 1971. He makes notes about where the key changes are (not precisely, but down to within a few seconds' accuracy). Then he goes back to the band with the structure for a new piece, keeping them in the dark about his real intent.

Rick's piano "ping" and Dave's guitar "squeal", both created before they even knew Roger had written a new song, just happened to fit in at certain places within Roger's sketch about the song's structure. They have alluded to this in interviews... the ones where they reveal how the title "Nothing, Parts 1-24" came to be. Roger, as pleased as everyone else with how Echoes has turned out as a song on its own, makes sure the final mix adheres to his notes about the timing of the movie scenes. This would in no way interfere with the song's life as a separate entity, and they could be free to change its length later during live performances if they wished.

No one would even have to know about it but Roger, and he wouldn't even have to watch 2001 and listen to Echoes simultaneously to know that it had worked. He probably hasn't actually got around to trying it, to this very day. But I am absolutely certain that the above scenario is likely as close to an official confirmation as we'll ever get.

Well, he hasn't said yes or no about echoes, though he said no on the Wiz of Oz thing. The one thing he did say tho was that he very much regretted not scoring 2001.
