The gig we were waiting for...

Well, it happened just a few short hours ago! David made his long-awaited surprise appearance at Roger's London O2 concert to sing and play his solos on "Comfortably Numb". It was pretty spectacular by all accounts...

And to put icing on the cake, Nick turned up as well! He and David came onstage at the finale to play "Outside the Wall", so I guess it was a true Pink Floyd reunion of sorts.

Whether by design or by chance, this happened on 12 May, the 44th anniversary of the "Games for May" concert where Pink Floyd debuted quadrophonic sound on a London stage and played an early version of "See Emily Play" for the first time.

Daves voice is spectacular for a 65 year old man. Playing is impeccable too.

Hoping to see Waters show in berlin, looks very pricey, but also looks worth every penny

Re: The gig we were waiting for...

Two major complains with the universal praise being heaped on the thing:

- David's guitar work was...(insert your own words here...and don't use 'sublime' or 'perfect')
- Has David EVER forgotten / got wrong the words in the second chorus?

For me a HUGE disappointent. A Chance for them to put on a great last all-guns-blazing display, and David ****ed it up...totally (has he EVER got the words of the last chorus wrong?). Has anyone ever heard him him screw up the first solo like that? And the last solo? (have a listen to Live 8, RAH, or Gdansk).

Perhaps vertigo, and the knowledge that Polly's kid is going to do time had some effects.

Real shame. Wish he hadn't bothered, or else he should have put some effort and practice in.

Unhappy....I was hoping for a real huge performance worthy of archives. It was not that...

Re: The gig we were waiting for...

I can see why you'd be disappointed or at least underwhelmed, being a huge fan of Gilmour's and/or a highly-attuned aural aficionado of "C. Numbs" past... it was certainly not the slickest rendition ever, by any stretch. In many ways, Live 8 tops it by a country mile. But reading personal deficiencies on Gilmour's part into the combined result is... not terribly sporting. Nor should all the musical blame be laid at his feet, for Roger deliberately chose to de-emphasize the show-stopping solo on this particular tour, as necessitated by the sheer scale of the production surrounding it. So the space normally afforded it to breathe and stretch out luxuriously is absent.

With all that said: yes, Dave certainly did f*** the words up! He's only human. Good job the backing vocalist spotted the error early enough to fit with the altered line.

1) he showed up the day before to watch the show so Id guess he had one day to prepare and rehearse.

2) He sang the wrong words in 'on an island' on the opening night of His Royal albert hall shows, so it happens. Could just be nerves, could be the emotion and the occasion getting to him

3) He didnt **** up the first solo unless im missing something.

4) Aside from his low E string completely detuning at the end (not sure how that happened), it was awesome.

Either way, what a massive over-reaction, and pretty ungreatful given they made the effort to do this.

Live 8 was great, but they had 3 or 4 days together and im sure they took the time knowing it was going out live to the whole world. Does anyone wish Mason hadnt turned up for live 8 because he made a mistake at the beginning of 'Money'? Did anyone wish Waters hadnt shown up when he sang a part of Wish you were here out of tune? Thought not

Anyway, he hasnt played regularly for 5 years and there were a couple of gaffs. That aside, his voice sounded great, his guitar sounded great.

Ive heard lots of mistakes in the live shows ive attended over the years, maybe if you're used to watching DVDs of gigs it would bother you more, given they edit over any little mistakes made.

I was actually moved the most by this finale with all three Floyds together:

I was there. And didn't even really notice until I got home and made a DVD with my iPhone4 recordings.
The atmosphere was awesome to say the least. And any errors that were made is really quite forgiven in my eyes. As it's their song. They can do what they want with it.
Just hope Roger is more forgiven. Which on the night he sounded though he was.
