Re: Listen to this Kiddie Winkies..

An excess of either is undesirable.

What with sunbathing for me being somewhat redundant, I was never enamored of the Southern Californian climate and would often venture out on those rare occasions when it pours...Man it pours with rain. And as thorin rightly says, one can at least see snow-capped peaks from most everywhere...on the clear days...usually after it pours...Man it pours.

Of course when I experienced my first snowfall in Idaho, I was the total child dashing round in "dry" (?) snow trying to make snowballs. Once I'd spent a month in a snowbound locale, I can tell you, it wasn't fun anymore. Don't even get me started on Black Ice. California driver in the snow? Clear the streets! :o

p.s. Never, EVER visit Great Britain for the weather. Bring an umbrella...and an inflatable dinghy in some parts.

Re: Listen to this Kiddie Winkies..

Thorin, you are correct. There are no mountains in Florida. However, I've been to Tennessee, and they have plenty of snow-peaked mountains. (I just never went up high enough to actually play in the snow...)
So, BoaB, are the rumors true? Is Britain always cold, overcast, and rainy? I've never been there (or out of the country at all). But I like that kind of weather...

Not really true if those are indeed the rumours.

The weather is not ALWAYS cold, overcast and rainy, just usually. No that's not true either, though after living here so long it seems like it. It's usually cold only during winter, but we can get a cold snap anytime. The most remarkable period people remind one of is the June many years ago when it was the hottest on record and yet it still snowed.

When it decides to drizzle or mist here, it can last for several days which can be a bit disheartening. And all those old ideas about pea-souper fog are well dated. The Killer Fogs of London were down to more coal smoke and motorcar emissions, resulting in poisonous fogs, than the poor weather. Nowadays, such things are unheard of. Funnily enough, I have found the best sunshine here occurs in the winter. Go figure.

Lately, the Summers have been fierce for all that they're short-lived. Generally, if one enjoys more than a solid month of sunshine during Summer, one is very lucky indeed. I haven't yet found anywhere more pleasant during a fine Summer's day than here in England. As I said, I used to love the rain, but now I'm not so sure; it keeps me from riding my Harley.

Hope this helps,
Byron

p.s. commisserations to all you Sunny Bunnies swealtering in the blazing sunshine.

That's good to know, BoaB. I hope to visit Britain one day.
I like coldness and drizzle and fog and all that, but I enjoy sunshine, too (just in limited doses). So Britain sounds like my kind of place.
BTW, BoaB: You own a Harley? I guess that makes you all-American cool.

Re: Listen to this Kiddie Winkies..

Always a pleasure, mate, never a chore.

Hmmm...never been called all-American before, but in some respects, I suppose I am.

From my Wilson tube socks to my Hanes underwear to my Levi's 501s to my Fruit o'the Loom t-shirt to me Ray-Bans to my Harley motorbike. I guess I DO fly the flag, somewhat unconsciously.

My dad was a funeral escort in LA in the 60s and he rode a Harley - and a very suave fellow he looked too in his uniform - so it was on just such a fine Summer's day here in London when, after putting it off for so long because of the huge expense, I thought, "Sod this! I'm buying a Hog!" So I did.

It's nothing patriotic, though in essence it IS, but I can't ride a motorbike leaning forward - makes me dizzy - and I would NEVER ride a Japanese clone harley or otherwise, and Moto Guzzi was a non-starter, so the only recourse was Harley Davidson.

"Gas, Grass or Ass. Nobody rides for free."

Re: Listen to this Kiddie Winkies..

Hmmm...I think I am about as "least American" as I am "all-American."

I like America, and the principles are admirable and noble, however principle rarely gets translated into practise which is where I have the problem. Excellent theory, dubious implementation.

I come from America but I am no longer chained to it.

p.s. Snow is WAY WAY overrated.

Re: Listen to this Kiddie Winkies..

Snow is cold yeah, but it's easier to to take than blasting sleet or hail showers, and the COLD thing is wind chill. Brrrr

Just try a February evening in the Fens of (flat-ish) East Anglia for a true taste of that particular hell.
