| Re: Favourite "Comfortably Numb" Interestingly, I always thought the extended length was one of the most important things about the PULSE solo. As for repetitions--perhaps. But then, I have a tendency to like minimalist works that might seem repetitive, but change ever so subtly. Who knows? It could be, but it just doesn't bother me. The major problem I had with DSoT was the mixing. Mr. Pratt or whoever was completely drowning out the lower vocal line--it just sounded faint to my ears. Just in general, the sound mixing was not pleasing to my ear.

| Re: Favourite "Comfortably Numb" Well, I have nothing but respect for all of you P.U.L.S.E. people, but that version just doesn't do it at all for me. It just isn't supposed to have that lush orchestra sound. Also, the vocals are god awful. Those people just aren't meant to sing the verse part. Roger is! I don't really like the guitar solo either. It is just excessive. Even a superior guitarist like Robert Fripp would get old if he did a solo that long, and Gilmour just isn't Robert Fripp, though he is an excellent guitarist that plays with feeling and excellent tone, even if he uses those twangy Fenders. Now the In The Flesh version is alright, but that idiot with the funny clothes should not sing the chorus part. He shouldn't even be there! Snowy White's work on that song and the rest of the show is excellent, but that guy with the strat is just a young Stevie- Ray rip- off, but with funnier clothes. The Delicate Sound of Thunder version is immediately disqualified because that tour was for A Momentary Lapse of Reason. The album, for me, is just too thin sounding, and so we are left with the version from Is There Anybody Out There. Great solo, the right people are singing, and it is played in context with the album, like it should be.

| Re: Favourite "Comfortably Numb" I have to agree with Dazed&confused about DSoT vs. PULSE versions. The DSot has an "AAAAAAAARRRGGGH" at least as good as the studio version. In PULSE it's just the back-up girls singing it. Dave's solo on DSOT sounds the best to me. I voted for the ITAOT cause Rog was there, but DSoT is a contender.

Superior? You mean technically? Gilmour certainly isn't as uptight as Fripp. A good example of Fripp wanking it for 10 minutes is Moonchild. You say it's a group improv? So is the end of comfortably numb. Math rock doesn't make you superior. Odd time signatures are just as easy as 4/4. ELP's Tarkus is filled with long synth solos that are pretty damn repetitive. I still pick itaot, though. |

| Re: Favourite "Comfortably Numb" "Lush orchestra sound"...hey, that's actually not a bad description of what I like. I've always imagined (though it will NEVER happen) an extended suite from that version of the song. BTW, I LOVE the orchestral version on "Us and Them: The Symphonic Pink Floyd". I remembered thinking that even though they were using the faster tempo, they HAD to have listened to PULSE, because there was no way they could've got something like that out of any other version. It's probably no surprise to you guys that I started out as a classical music fan. Floyd was the first modern band that actually got my attention; it usually takes a very full, impressive sound to do that.

| Re: Favourite "Comfortably Numb" Ok, just defending myself from the 2nd page Its just that on the studio version the "Is there anybody out there" part happens on the end of bring the boys back home before it skips onto CN, if you get what i mean

| Re: Favourite "Comfortably Numb" I agree with dazed&confused and stratman re: DSoT version vs. Pulse. DSoT solo kicks major league butt. Like D&C said, Gilmour's harmonics still makes me shiver, and I've listened to that version at least twice a week for 14 years. I agree somewhat with FWr w/r to the vocal mix on the verses, although I think she is somewhat biased against DSoT because Mr. Wright's vocals aren't as distinct as Pulse. Like stratman, I miss Roger's vocals (and he does a great job on ITAOT), but Roger or no Roger, DSoT is still my version of choice. (Dave's version from his 1984 solo tour is pretty darn good, too.)

I bought that in 1995 and listened to it once. I was going through massive emotional trauma at the time, and it depressed me so bad I put it away and forgot it. I'll have to dust it off now that I'm in much happier times. F-W, have you listened to "Objects Of Fantasy-The music of PF-- by David Palmer and the Royal Phil? It's great. You, as a lover of Classical and Orchestra stuff would love it. ![]() Meanwhile, back at the Ranch, the only thing that kept me from voting for the Studio version of CN was the fact that it fades out as Dave is really starting to smoke on his outro solo. That's infuriating. ![]()

| Re: Favourite "Comfortably Numb" No, I haven't heard Objects of Fantasy. But I heard Orchestral Maneuvers, and that one is BAD. They actually SING with the orchestra. Furthermore, they took one of the songs OFF KEY. I do NOT like that. ![]() Terminalfrost--good for you on catching the subtext there. And stratman, the tuning out on Mr. Gilmour in the studio version is one of the HUGE reasons I don't like it. The other being that the sound is dry and sterile anyway, and the fact that it needs to slow down so you can really savour the music. You can really tell how constrained the musicians were by that time.
