The Floyd want to "mix the 80's out"

I found this intriguing. Apparently, Gilmour and Mason are bothered enough by the dated sound of A Momentary Lapse of Reason that they've started remixing it with more real drums and fewer synths! Engineering boffin Andy Jackson tells more in this Q&A on the Immersion Editions.

Intriguing indeed, mate. Thanks for sharing!

As for myself, I think I'd like it with fewer synths and more real drums. I was just listening to AMLoR the other day and actually thought that it's the one album that did not age very well.

I couldn't even name the tracklist off of it being that I can't think of a single time that I've ever listened to it so if I were to hear a 'new' version, that would probably seem like the definitive rendering.

Re: The Floyd want to "mix the 80's out"

I can see the reasoning behind them wanting to do that but it sounds like revisionist history here. I could be wrong but it's like pretending certain things didn't happen when they did. I bought the album on release and along with Radio KAOS (another '80s sound casualty) played them rather a lot. Maybe because they became ingrained in my personal PF history, I don't hear how badly dated they likely sound.
When the album came out, I enjoyed it for what it was; the new PF album without Waters. However, it sounds a little forced, like they were trying to prove that they are PF! Trying to sound "classic".

To be honest, I'm not sure what I think. I'd probably like it enough with the '80s mixed out. I liked the 1986 revision of Zappa's We're Only In It For The Money, probably because I heard it before the '68 original, but a lot of fans thought it was sacrilegious to mess with history as it happened.

To be honest, I think K.A.O.S. suffered more from the '80s than Momentary Lapse.... did.
Let's do that album instead.

Thumbs up Re: The Floyd want to "mix the 80's out"

This is actually very interesting, even if it only shows that AMLOR gets the "Immersion" treatment - which is a good idea, because this album needs some rehabilitation.
I'd also thought about remixing it, not so much because of the sound. I cannot imagine "Dogs Of War" without electrical drums, for example. But I think that there are some weak, or even missing, transitions, which has always disturbed my view on an album, that is otherwise very programmatic and intriguing, with its multi-interpretations.
My idea of an Immersion edition:
CD1: Discovery
CD2: new remix
CD3: complete live version of AMLOR in the album's order (including 'Terminal Frost', as well
DVD1: surround versions of old and new AMLOR
DVD2: Delicate Sound of Thunder + extras
Blu-Ray: ???

Also included on the CDs could be special versions & unreleased tracks.

Re: The Floyd want to "mix the 80's out"

I saw PF early on that tour. When Echoes was still the opening number rather than Shine On...
The running order for the tracks on the new album was "Signs Of Life", "Learning to fly" then all of side 2, then all of the rest of side 1 except for "one slip", which was played during the encore with "Run Like Hell" and "Comfortably Numb".

Echoes was the concert opener and the second set was a "greatest Hits" set.

Why did I just say all that? I don't know.

Anyway, GREAT immersion set, Darksidefreak.

Re: The Floyd want to "mix the 80's out"

The "Signs of Life" and "The Dogs of War" screen films would be a good addition to a possible Immersion box set. Not sure if we really need a Delicate Sound of Thunder remaster, but it's certainly a possibility. I'd prefer to have that 1987 Atlanta Omni concert remastered in full.

I understand Daphne Blue's misgivings about revisionism, but the fact is that for me this album simply doesn't live up to the Floyd legacy in its current form. It's nearly devoid of real drumming on Nick's part, and the keyboard parts are very un-Rick. Correcting these things (to supplement, rather than replace the original) would be good IMO.
