A Couple of Queries Concerning Lyrics

I was wondering if anybody here could tell me with certainty what the lyric after the first line in 'Fearless' is? i.e. "You say the hill's too steep to climb, ????????????, you say you'd like to see me try". Most of the lyrics I looked at on the internet say "climb it", which is how I sing it when I play it on guitar as that is also what it says in the tab I printed out when I was learning the song, but I personally really do not think that is what Mr Gilmour sings. In fact I think it sounds absolutely nothing like it. I really have no idea what he says. I've never heard a live performance of the song but maybe somebody who has can help me? It's very hard to make out in the studio version.

The other lyric I wanted to ask about is "bus stop ratbag" from 'Pigs'. Who does this refer to and what is the origin of the expression? I find it humouress but have no idea what is refers to.

Re: A Couple of Queries Concerning Lyrics

Pink Floyd never performed "Fearless" live, but I personally think the missing word you're referring to is "chiding", which I take to mean that the speaker is being rebuked or scolded for even thinking of climbing that hill. It's never appeared in any official lyrics as such, so that's just speculation on my part.

In "Pigs" the ratbag in question would appear to be a stiff and proper aristocratic type, who enjoys far kinkier bedroom play than her prim public exterior facade ever lets on. This ties in with the next verse excoriating Mary Whitehouse for repressing public discourse, particularly of the "smutty" variety.

My notes suggest the first line of Fearless is "You say the hill’s too steep to climb, climbing" - but it's something I've never had a definitive answer on either.

That's what the official lyrics say, but I don't think that makes as much sense as my interpretation.

Re: A Couple of Queries Concerning Lyrics

Cheers for the replies. I saw instances of both "chiding" and "climbing" when I was browsing lyric sites. I'm gonna go with "chiding". I've always thought that whatever he says sounds like it starts with a J. j is a very similar sound to ch. "Chiding" makes sense too.

Surprised they never performed it live. It's such a great song. One of my favourite normal length Floyd songs.

Re: A Couple of Queries Concerning Lyrics

I agree with you both - 'chiding' is a very Roger-esque word.
