I see Not Now John's standpoint...
I mean, look at the Rolling Stones (with no disrespect to Stratman, who mentioned that he liked the Stones, or other Stones fans here). Take a good look. What have they turned into?
I see a bunch of old guys, with good intentions, who hurt their reputation by staying together. How often do you hear jokes about Mick Jagger on stage in a wheelchair, or about Keith Richards on stage with an IV hooked into his arm? Am I the only person who thinks the Stones could have stopped those jokes and kept some respect if they had called it quits maybe 5 or 10 years ago?
Seriously, I can see the want for a new Floyd album... or tour. I know that almost everyone on this forum would lust after that (including me), but if the Floyd just went ahead and said, "Hey, we're not going to tour or record again," then they could retain what respect they have left (after people have admitted that they don't like Momentary Lapse of Reason or the Division Bell) and stop their fans from having to wait and wait and wait for the slightest possibility that their favorite band might commit a note to tape or begin a new tour.
If the Floyd made that announcement, I would be pretty sad, like everyone else. But, in the end, we won't get to see the possiblity of a dud album or tour... which would tarnish the Floyd's image and respect. And, in the end, I think that is great.

(cheer up),

-Shane

I mean, they NEVER released a BAD album. Even the albums at the bottom of my list (The Final Cut, Ummagumma studio, AMLOR if you want) are not *bad*! They're not as good as all the rest. They never did a bad album and they never will. And even IF they release a real crap album, after all (which I think it's impossible), what the hell do we have to lose? Nothing. The music we love is always there and always will be. There's no way they can "ruin" what they've done.

I agree with mad yannis. I'll take anything new I can get.

This thread (and others) reflect some fan disappointment with AMLOR and TDB because of the tepid lyrics....I agree they're pretty ordinary, but its hard to write biting and memorable lyrics when you are a cheerful fellow without gobs of inner angst and turmoil. When Dave tries to make his lyrics "Roger-like", he comes off looking a little silly....that's no knock on Dave, though....Nobody else can do it either.

I, too, "wish" Roger and the others could reconcile and do a blow-out reunion album. I also wish I was taller. And more handsome. And richer. And funnier!

Let Me Explain...

I never said that Momentary Lapse of Reason was bad. I like a good deal of it. Hell, I've never heard the Division Bell.
What I meant was that, to some people, the two aforementioned albums don't 'measure up' to their '70s stuff. AMLOR and Dark Side of the Moon are both good, but in different ways. Dark Side was done when the band (with Waters) was working together, and before the band was really known in America (which was solved by the mere release of DSOTM).
Momentary Lapse of Reason was good (to me) in the respect that Gilmour, Mason, and Wright actually said, "Who cares about Roger?" and got back together to do their own stuff. I seems to be a very 'liberating' record to me... it sounds like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders.
So, Momentary Lapse of Reason and DSOTM can't be compared like that... becasue the situation was different in both cases.
And, like Mad Yannis said, I doubt the Floyd's whole career could be blighted at a single stroke, but it is certainly possible. Look at what happened to Elton John... he was respected in the '70s. But now, a lot of (but not all ) people consider him nothing more than a joke.
The Stones' fans also have the possibility of looking back at all the good stuff that their band did. But they also have to put up with all the ribbing from people who don't like the Stones' current incarnation, that of rock's 'elder statesmen'.
And then, thought must be put into the fact that Pink Floyd's appeal has never been looks (like the Stones, for the most part), but their music.
I say, if the Floyd can risk coming back out and not making fools of themselves (which will probably not happen, I was in a pretty sadistic mood when I first stated my opinion on this topic), then I am all for a new album or tour. But that possiblity will linger in the back of your mind, will it not?

Shane, bro, calm down. I wasn't slammin you....I pretty much agree with your analysis; I just don't fear "the boys" putting out really bad stuff. I have confidence that whether Roger, Dave or the both of them together (ha!) create new music, it will be worthy of the PF legacy. The huge PF fanbase will all forever disagree, and want to rip out each other's livers over who or what is best, but , that's kind of the fun of it. (just trying to "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life")

Yeah, I also have to agree the Stones are getting a bit grotesque trying to extend their career to ridiculous lengths.

I didn't think you were trying to slam me, Stratman. It just turned out that you put your post in while I was writing my post...
I was only replying to Mad Yannis' opinions...
I still dig everyone!!

I have the answer, since, as was mentioned earlier, no one except us, the fanatical fans, actually know or care what the actual members of Floyd look like, the current line-up could simply sell the franchise to sound-alikes, 90% of the people out there wouldn't even know. Hey its worked for plenty of others.

Maybe that is part of the reason David is not keen to carry on as Pink Floyd (he has been quoted as describing the whole "Pink Floyd" thing as "A great lumbering behemoth...") , the fact that almost anyone could appear under the Pink Floyd banner and sell out a world tour is maybe what's causing him to dig his heels in and be a bit cagey about continuing under the band name.
I wonder how much interest the three of them would garner if they reformed under a different name ?? With diehard fans yes , of course , but everybody else ???
