Things That Are Annoying Me About Pompeii

The first would be:
How the hell did they power a 4,000 watt PA system and all of their electrical instruments? With generators?
Second:
Does anyone know why the key of the songs was moved up a half step? It's annoying to try to play along to Pompeii because of this!
Third:
What are those things on Nick's drums?

Hey, man, look at the two tom drums, on the stand, in middle of his two bass drums.
Don't you see some red things on top of them? These are the things confusing me. I really can't figure out what the hell they are.
I think they are there to maybe muffle the drums, but they are sure different from any kind of drum mufflers I've seen!
Odd...

In all seriousness, is it because Mr. Waters mistuned his bass and then they all had to live with it?

(Note: Maybe this is why the two RW's started having problems with each other--after Mr. Wright swore he would never let the bassist tune his own instrument EVER AGAIN! )

First: Yes, with generators. What, do you think the Pompeii Municipal Council gave them a special feed?
Second: The original film version was shown at the correct speed, but for some reason the home videotape was dubbed at a slightly fast speed.
Third: Dunno. Either strange mufflers or mics.

Listening to the video right now... and I think I know the reason! It makes Syncopated Pandemonium sound that much more chaotic. WHEEE!!! BABADUDUDUMMDUDABABADUDUDUMMMDUDUBABA

I wonder how many generators it took...
I heard that when you plug a Hammond organ into a generator, that it can go out of tune because the Hammond organ relies on a steady current to keep it in tune.
And so I thought that they all tuned to the Hammond because the power wasen't steady and the Hammond itself can't be tuned. But then I remembered that tuning a piano can be a bitch...
The film dubbing speed thing sounds plausible.

Interesting you should mention this...according to the May 2002 Keyboard Magazine, this is a problem that can happen with the Hammond--some outdoor power generators can cause the Hammond to play at an unsteady pitch because of inconsistent power. The listed solution is to have a technician "install a frequency conversion kit".

I don't know--this could account for it, or it might not.

Maybe it's because cinema movies run at 24 fps but PAL system (standard system for TV and vhs in Europe) runs at 25 fps. You will notice that videotapes of movies are always slightly shorter than original movies even if there's no edit of any kind.

That also sounds very reasonable, Mad Yannis.
The film was most likely tranferred to videotape in Europe, not America (it being a French/British film).
I also read that the same problem came up when they tried to transfer the Beatles movie A Hard Day's Night to video. The frames didn't match up, and all of the songs came out faster.

Good to see so many knowledgeable people here.
