Re: Careful with 'THOSE AXES' Eugene!!!

I really, really like this song, but sometimes I feel that I like one version better than the other (live ones, bootlegs, studio recordings). And I was wondering which one are you guys more partial to:

a) Careful with that axe eugene from the Ummagumma live CD

b) Careful with that axe eugene, the studio recording that can be found on Relics

c) Come in Number 51..., from the Zabriskie Point soundtrack

d) Careful with that axe eugene, from the Live at Pompeii video

or..e)I know this may not seem or maybe actually be a different version of the song but I recently downloades 'beset by creatures of the deep' and it's good and sounds 'a lot' like CWTAE, tell me what you think

I would like to know what you think, I know there are other versions but these ones are the ones that actually stand out in my opinion without ruining the 'appreciation' of the music (as I think 'some' bootlegs do to the original recordings). Thanks

Of those, I would probably choose either "Live at Pompeii" or Ummagumma Live, but I can't decide between those two.

same for me. i really don't care to much for the one on relics. the one on zariskie point is better than the relics one but the live ones beat it by far.

The Live at Pompeii and Ummagumma versions. It's a tie man. I love both of them.

without a doubt the live one on ummagumma. The screams on that one are more piercing than any of the other versions i've heard.

Live at Pompeii, although the Ummagumma version is very good as well.

On the topic of Careful With That Axe Eugene, the book "Prog Rock Considered" has an in-depth essay on the studio version.

Re: Careful with 'THOSE AXES' Eugene!!!

I agree with floyd the barber that the screams in the Ummagumma version are the most piercing and spine-tingling. Still, of course almost everybody will preffer pompeii and Ummagumma, but what do you guys think of the other versions? and does anybody have a clue about 'beset by creatures of the deep'???

What about it? It was used as part of the show "The Man and The Journey".

Re: Careful with 'THOSE AXES' Eugene!!!

Re-listening to it, I really liked it, but somehow the first time I heard it, I swore it playes like a very different version of CWTAE. Maybe I was in the wrong state of mind, but do you think it feels similar?

see ya around, on the turing away!

That's because it is a version of Careful with that Axe, it was used under that title for part of the man and the journey suite.

Re: Careful with 'THOSE AXES' Eugene!!!

I like the Ummagumma Live version the best. The Relics version isn't all that great: it really lacks something. And I don't really like the Live at Pompeii version because I don't like the graphics that go along with it. Nothing against the sound, though.

Definitely "Come in Number 51, Your Time is Up." Can you say intense?

Re: Careful with 'THOSE AXES' Eugene!!!

As much as I love them, I'm glad someone posted anything other than the Ummagumma or Pompeii versions. Actually, 'Come On Number 51...' is a very very good version of CWTAE and very intense indeed. Does anyone know what's up with the title though, the reference to the # 51....

I think it may have something to do with the general call of the boat hire attendant, for boating lakes, and that boat number 51's alloted rental period has ended, it's time is up.
