Re: Do you still have a PULSE?

I guess I just found the sound of the original rather flat, compared to PULSE. The places where it suffered worst in comparison were the intro to "Time" (just compare the original to the magnificence of the guitar and drums thudding through the stadium), and...well, I can't really explain what it is about the guitar on "Money" that is so screechy and annoying on DSotM. I also think "Any Colour" pales a bit, but that one really isn't too bad.

Thanks, FWr - I appreciate the sentiment. I have also grow quite attached to that CD. I absolutely love the version of 'Run Like Hell' and 'WYWH'. Parts of DSotM are better than the original, some aren't. I'm just glad that we have some many version to choose from.

I'm sure I'll find it - unless one of my kids' friends stole it ... hmmm ... nah - they wouldn't dare.

Nah. To tell you the truth, if you were to want to change my opinion, the best thing to do would've probably been to go back in time and give me the original album before PULSE.

I also enjoy the version of "Run Like Hell"...it's interesting--Mr. Gilmour's guitar work seems to fill the same place as Mr. Waters' screaming (though certainly not at the same level of anger!)...kind of taunting and teasing the audience before the song begins.

Re: Do you still have a PULSE?

I bought a copy of PULSE the day it went on the market in the US. It blinked its last about Oct 98. I put in new batteries a few months ago... (2 AA's--Takes about 30 seconds). I figured I was the only one nerdy enough to change the batteries, but I guess not!

Re: Do you still have a PULSE?

I agree with FloydWright, Pulse rendition of Dark Side is *superb*. I don't want to say the original is bad but Pulse version is better than the live performances of the 70s.

Re: Do you still have a PULSE?

I think it has mainly to do with the sound and acoustics, more than anything.

Re: Do you still have a PULSE?

FWr,

You also might be biased because PULSE was your first hearing of DSoTM. I believe you alluded to that concept ("To tell you the truth, if you were to want to change my opinion, the best thing to do would've probably been to go back in time and give me the original album before PULSE."), but I just wanted to say it again because.... ummm.... yeah.

WHAT?!!!

My light went out after about 3 years(some time in 98).

What is this craziness I'm hearing? Darkside of the Moon better on PULSE? No way! As a guitar player the first thing that stands out is the sound of Dave's Money guitar solo in the studio version. It is far superior to any live recording. I think the early 70's live versions were also far superior to PULSE. With ole Rog there, it just sounded right. Plus I really dig the raw feel of the music back then, compared to the overproduced stuff on PULSE. Don't get me wrong now, I do like PULSE.

Re: Do you still have a PULSE?

I don't know...I just find the sound of the original guitar on "Money" to be very abrasive. I can see why you might say PULSE is overproduced--but I really do like it better that way. The original sounds kind of raw in comparison. It doesn't mean it's not good, though! But still, when I want DSotM, I break out my copy of PULSE; I almost never listen to the original.

This is unbelievable, on the lights matter. Am I the ony one who--without touching the batteries--still has a working, blinking light? (Even though it's very faint)

Smile Re: Do you still have a PULSE?

Great news!

After I left the forums last night, I did tear apart the closet next to our family room, and there on the floor, tucked under a roll of wrapping paper....was PULSE. I'm changing the batteries tonight. If the damn CD case had been blinking, I could have just turned off the lights and followed the beacon

Phew - I'm so relieved.

Back to the discussion about Dark Side - studio album or Pulse...
I agree that some of David's solos saturate (although it's not too bad on the half-speed master LP, but there is a depth and breadth to the studio album that just can't be matched by Pulse. Matter of fact, I don't think any Floyd album since has matched that sound (I attribute it to Parsons being at the top of his game for this album). Even WYWH of The Wall don't sound as rich as DSotM (The Wall is close). What amazes me about Pulse (and DSoT for that matter) is the quality of the LIVE CD. Those are recordings from f***ing stadiums! Unbelievable sound quality!

Just my additional 2 cents...

Re: Do you still have a PULSE?

well they did run it through a soundboard i'm sure. they didn't just have a mic hanging in the air in the middle of the stadium. i'm sure there was polishing done to it too.

Re: Do you still have a PULSE?

I'm fond of PULSE----My favorite versions of "Astronomy Domine" and "Another Brick Pt2" are on it. I like to get my PULSE video out and watch my favorite unknown guitar player, Tim Renwick, do his fingertapping and facial contortions to the outro solo in "Another Brick".
