Best song on Atom Heart Mother?

Very underrated album, but it's my personal favorite. I choose the title track. How about you?

And no, I'm not gonna do a "worst song of this era" topic!

Cheers!

Now, there's a shock.

This one's a bit easier to choose than for MORE, but not much: Summer '68

Honourable mention goes to Fat Old Sun.

Summer 68 is my favourite, indeed. Fat Old Sun close second, the live versions were mind blowing.

If there's one thing that I like about you Byron, it's probably that you possess continuity.

Cheers,

Talking Aaah, sweet AHM...

Such a lovely little record... it might not be my all-time favorite, but I'm very keen on this album, because around the time I was planning to purchase it, I found the cassette edition between the poor cd/cassette collection of a school friend of mine who I knew would never listen to such things.
When she saw the light in my eyes, she just told me I could keep it, c'ause she never listened to it anyway.
So I did, and soon after I was traveling around England with my dad, and the cassette became the perfect soundtrack to the beautiful landscapes of english countryside.
Back in Italy, then, I went on listening to that old tape so much that at one point, the tired old magnetic tape appeared to have broken up! I was prepared to finally buy the CD one day or another, but I didn't want to lose one thing I had grew so affectionate to! So I opened up the cassette and fixed the tape with some adhesive tape. Luckily enough, the tape wasn't really broken, but just detached from one of the two round thingies around which they roll up (how do you call them???) so the operation wasn't that complex.

Later that same year I went to the seaside with a friend of mine and a lot of cannabis, and of course AHM, Meddle and other PF records became the soundtrak to that "trip"

Anyway, back to the thread, I voted for "If"... there's a mellowness in that song that won't ever get away from me.

I voted for the title track...
I like how it starts with a small horn intro... then busts into the Floyd, jamming with an (unfortunately overdubbed) horn section... and then, into a small 3-piece (organ, viola, bass) section... and on and on... into "Funky Dung", possibly the funkiest riff ever played by the Floyd... into the odd section, with the backwards tape, Mellotron, weird voices... into the glorious "Reamergence", playing the awesome beginning riff...

This song encompasses everything the Floyd had to show for at this period... into a single song... with orchestra!

Anything better on this record?
I do like "Fat Old Sun" and "Summer '68". "Fat Old Sun" makes me feel sad sometimes... I do not know why.

 (but happy again,)

-Shane

Which One's Pink: those little round things that the tape roll onto are called the tape spools.
You must have loved that tape... I've never played one enough to actually pull the tape out of the spools!

Thanks fixxy...I think. And warm welcome back to the boards which have sorely missed you, IMO.

"Summer '68", of course!

And it's not just because of who the author is. There's a moment in there, just as the first "How do you feel" is about to start...that is just heavenly. I don't know what he did to the Hammond, but it's an unbelievable effect--like sunlight and wind rushing at you, faster and faster. Almost makes you want to spread your wings and fly...

Anyway...I enjoy the whole song, too. Also, an honourable mention goes to "Fat Old Sun"...how I love to sing along with that one!

I voted for "Fat Old Sun". I just love that outro guitar riff.

I love the title track too, but wish Ron Geesin would have kept his nose out of it...I always thought his horn fanfare at the beginning was lame...but it's a great song otherwise, and I love Dave's dreamy lap steel work @ 4:00, and his simple but way-cool solo @ 10:48 (sorry to give time figures, I'm never sure on that song which part is which)

"If" may be Roger's most touching song. I like it.

"Summer '68"--Rick's best, IMO

"Alan's....." not my favorite.

i would really like the title track but in my opinion they should have done it without the orchestra. i like AHM don't get me wrong but after you hear them do it without the orchestra you realize they could have done it themself. but it is still a good song. i have a live version that is w/ the orchestra and it is 30 mins long! its pretty awesome.

I didn't vote for it, but am I the only one who rather likes "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast"? Seriously, aside from the gross eating noises, that song actually makes me hungry...

Yeah I just saw that no-one has voted for Alans Breakfast and i wish i had now... i really love it, its funny and I find the whole thing really cheery.. even if alan doesnt sound so happy. Come to think of it I like all the songs on AHM equally... i always listen to the whole thing, neva just one song, its one of their best IMO.
