Exclamation What is YOUR favorite Compillation?

What is your favorite Pink Floyd Compillation?

Personally I'm not too keen on compillations, some of them are awesome, but that simply hasn't happened with Floyd.

As for my Floyd compillations....
I relish my 'Relics'!

Oh and feel free to choose more than one options as you vote!

Also, as we all know really good compilations are hard to come by, so if you know of a good one please post it (doesn't have to be Floyd). The best one I own has to be Led Zeppelin's BBC Sessions!

Like it or not the best Floyd compilation is Echoes. I should also mention The Early Singles which definitely deserves a release separate from the Shine On box set.
Talking of other bands Greatest Hits I and II by Queen are awesome compimations (if you like that band), as well as Used Songs by Tom Waits, Money For Nothing by Dire Straits and Legend by Bob Marley!

I voted for the two I have, Echoes and Works...though, generally compilations aren't my bag. I agree with Yannis, definitely, on Queen's Greatest Hits 1 and 2....Queen+ Greatest Hits 3 had some good songs on it, but overall, not the best. Classic Queen was also very good.

As far as other bands go, My Generation - The Very Best of The Who I liked for the most part. And although every sell-out went and bought the "1" cd and claimed they were a Beatles fan for years, the compilation wasn't half bad...How could a compilation by someone as classic as the Beatles go wrong?

U2's greatest hits was good also.

Red face De compilationes

Of course it's true that no record with Beatles songs in it can go wrong, but 1 is very poor and surprisingly one-dimensional for such a versatile group.
To me the only real Beatles compilation is the 4-disc "The Beatles 1962-1966 & 1967-1970" (the red and blue ones).

It's maybe the best compilation ever, as it features not only super-known hits, but also many B-sides and album tracks (Old brown shoe, Don't let me down, I am the walrus etc...)

Anyway, being that kind of beatle fan that owns every album, when some relative gave me "1", the christmas it came out, of course I showed a thankful face and cheered and all that, but then I sold it straight away to some friend who'd asked me for it

As for floyd compilations, I refused to even buy Echoes (how come there are more tracks from TDB than from Meddle??? How dare they cut shortened versions of Echoes and SOYCD??? No Dogs???? Come on!!!) and I think that the best ones are Relics and Works.

I voted for Relics, but I can see that Echoes is got to be the "el supremo" comp album.. I can't bring myself to buy it cause I have everything on it already. I was trying to justify getting it so I could hear all 9 parts of SOYCD in order, but then I thought I could just burn it that way on a CD if it's that important. I'm sure I'll end up buying it, however, I always do.

Very true.

1 was kind of dissappointing, and as was Echoes, but they were good for aiming at a new generation of fans who were not familiar with bands and also older fans who felt like being nostalgic. For recent fans, like me, Echoes was a good place to begin, and since buying some of the albums as a result of hearing the songs on Echoes, I developed my taste for PF. By the way, the mixing of Echoes was a bit terrible, and I prefer the original version of Shine On and the track Echoes much more than the edited ones.

I chose Relics, becasue it holds sentimental value...
The first two Floyd CDs I bought were Relics and Dark Side of the Moon... on the same day! I had heard (and loved) the Wall before, but I wanted to get two CDs that would show me the Floyd in a 'varied' way... and I don't think two CDs go better together. I got all the good stuff with Syd, the best tracks from More, the best of the 'post-Syd-before-Meddle' tracks... and Dark Side of the Moon! It was really great... I don't think getting into the Floyd could have gotten any better.

Question

Recently bought 'Works'. I have to say I enjoy it, it's scattershot as to the selections, but I'm glad it has that odd selection, makes for a very good, very weird trip indeed.

2 questions:

Up until now, the only difference I hear in the 'quadraphonic' versions of 'Brain Damage/Eclipse', is that there is a little more screaming throughout. Who knows what are the real differences here?

Oh and I read or heard someone say that 'Works' has the best version of....
Then I can't remember, I think it was either 'Set The Controls...' or 'One Of These Days'

All in all, Relics has to be the best compillation, the reasons are so many, maybe some other time...

See ya, 'cause she died on TV!

Relics obviously is the best, unique quirky! I do also love works I think it has an excellent changeover form Fearless to Brain damage, it works a lot better than what I thought, one thing I DON'T like about it though is that it has several species ugh

cheers

Echoes was a good compillation in my opinion, the track listing could have been better, but that's an issue that could be debated forever: Which ones deserved to be in?, Which ones don't?, etc.

And there is NO sense in editing 'Shine On...', 'Echoes' and 'Marooned'

I just don't get it

This would have been the best choice:

- Release Echoes minus the 15+ min. songs; 'Shine On' and 'Echoes'

- Fill in the 30 min. of extra space with songs from the albums that were totally absent on Echoes, and/or some great ones that were left off.

- At the same time release 'Pink Floyd: Magnum Opuses' CD. This release would have to be done separately. So the new fans could really get into Floyd's longer compositions.

- This 'Opuses' CD has to have:

* Echoes
* Atom Heart Mother
* Shine On You Crazy Diamond (all)
* Dogs

All the really longs songs, but here are the pros:

We wouldn't get a 4-track album, but one that actually divides the songs in their respective segments. For example, Shine On, would be nine songs, each part in itself, of course it would flow with NO interruption. Also AHM is divided in sections, and I'm pretty sure Echoes is also. It would be nice for the fans to identify each segment. Dogs is not divided, they would have to come up with something!

Cons: it 'could' diminish the impact of these songs if put in that order, or away from the context of their albums. People who say it is all 'one single piece', would be pissed to find it divided. That doesn't seem as much of a risk.

Mmm, looks like I got carried away. Sorry

See ya, and if the band you're in starts playing different tunes!

The best has to Echoes and Relics. For Echoes it is the assortment of tracks, although some stuff from OBC could have been put in, Cirrus Minor put in, Echoes the song and SOYCD should not have been cut, no stuff from the TFC album in.... I could go on but these are only minor quibbles.

For Relics, it has the 60s ones I like, such as Careful With That Axe and See Emily Play but also my favourites from More, Cirrus Minor and Nile Song. It compromises nicely for Echoes shortcomings.

As for other compilations The Best of The Doors comes highly recommended. It has such a good mix of all their albums in my opinion and The End is perfectly placed. Makes for some wierd trips, that song.

Another would have to be Elements: The Best of Mike Oldfield. It has all his best pieces and gives you a taster of whats on each album. Its certainly persuaded me to get his albums because he is a superb guitarist with songs and instrumentals just as good and visual as PF's.

The Kate Bush compilation is quite good too although I don't listen to it too much (usually because PF is on the CD player!) I have most of her albums as well.

Phew!! I think thats enough for now.

Red Bull gives you wings but I sure as hell don't,

Mmm, well, 'Shine On', 'Echoes' and 'Atom Heart Mother' come in segments.

Shine on is divided in 9 sections or parts. That's why some people say, oh I love parts 5-9, I really dig part 8, etc.

Atom Heart Mother has the sections themselves on the album booklet:

a) Father's shout
b) Breast Milky
c) Mother Fore
d) Funky Dung
e) Mind Your Throats Please
f) Reemergence

I can't remeber the names of the segments from Echoes.

But I think it would be nice for every Floyd fan to know which part is which in these songs. Everyone has a favorite part, now you could identify it better.

I just thought of another pro and con about this idea:

Pro: we would have this awesome cd with 4 amazing very long songs, this would make for great road-trip music. Or just great ambient lounging music.

Con: some 'musically ignorant' people would only play the segments where they 'sing' and they could forget the rest. This isn't likely to happen, since they *paid* for it, they would have to listen at least a couple of times. And that's all they would need to get hooked on these songs!

See ya, it's allright we know where you've been!
