VISITING the Highlands of Papua New Guinea to see the Mudmen of the Mat Tribe has not always been a simple tourist jaunt. Twenty years ago, my wife and I, both newcomers to the Highlands, decided to visit the village of the Mudmen. Finding a guide with the courage to come with us was not easy but eventually we found a Goroka man who, after some persuasion and a suitable reward, agreed to escort us to the village.
...
From the increasing discomfit of our driver and guide it was obvious that something important was happening but our repeated requests for an explanation was either not understood because of our limited knowledge of the Melanese Pidgin or he simply knew little more than we did...

Papua New Guinea hosts 850 indigenous languages. (Source: PNG Embassy to the Americas)

Official Language: English

Official Religion: None, but Christianity predominates (97% of the Country's population is Christian)

"Childhoods End" by far for me. Just a great song.

I voted Burning Bridges, but I'm gonna have to jump on the Childhood's End bandwagon now.

The first rack I listened to was Burning Bridges and I became absolutely fascinated by its hypnotic moods. Recently I got the whole album and found many interesting songs and it became one of my favorite Floyd's album. I voted for Wots the Deal which I think has very powerful lyrics and a nice folk ballad rhythm. Great worth undoubtedly.

Wots...Uh, The Deal...excellent choice! A very nice tune - it was great to hear Gilmour resurrect it for his OAI tour.

Re: Best track on Obscured By Clouds

I voted for Mudmen. . I love those eerie noises Rick comes up with! And David's solo is just one of the most riveting and heartfelt he had done in those days.

Although Childhoods End is a close second, I prefer the few live versions thay did.

The weakest song for me has to be The Gold It' in The... Such hokey lyrics, can't believe Rog wrote such drivel!!!

LOL...I never did write a review. But then, the album never did 'catch me by the short and curly's'.

Ah well, I probably would have offended BoaB anyway.

I've always liked Free Four, a nice jaunty little rocker, and the lyrics point to themes that would be later explored on the Wall & Final Cut. A shame it never had a single release in the UK.

Re: Best track on Obscured By Clouds

If I were rating this album amongst all 14, I'd put it pretty much in the middle.
My favourite songs here are Burning Bridges, Wot’s... Uh The Deal, Childhood’s End, Free Four.
Free Four gets my vote for my favourite - it's so different when contrasted with other Pink Floyd songs. Maybe the contrast of depressing lyrics and upbeat music. For sure it would place in my top ten Floyd songs.
