OBC Poll

I know, I know, I never thought I'd be the one to post a poll, but I have recently been reunited with OBC, rediscovering, yet again, just why I love the Pink Floyd.

It's my all-time favourite PF album. Full stop.

So anyway, I thought I'd be mischievous because this poll should be quite difficult since there are so many choices of very good songs. I myself find it impossible so I won't be voting.

BTW, I've combined the first two instrumental tracks, because though dissimilar, it could be claimed they are opposite sides of the same PF coin. Also, for the inveterate mischief-makers like myself, I wanted to include an "Other" choice for them to vote for something altogether different and not even on the album.

Flighty Floydian,
Byron

I voted for "Mudmen". Though "Burning Bridges" and the opening tracks each were strong competition. In the case of the former, I decided the instrumental track was even stronger. And "Stay" is wonderful for me, but against the other tracks, it's not quite the best on the album. I think that's more of a personal like on my part.

I can't even vote... I don't own it!
Seriously... I always considered it (subconciously) to be kind of an 'odd' release, maybe not as good as their other albums (this is why I havn't been exactly running out to get it).
As Floyd fans, would you guys seriously recommend it as my next purchase?
I want feedback!

I've always thought "Obscured...." was the most underrated of all Floyd Albums... it's especially amazing when you consider that they wrote and recorded it in 10 or so days. It is simple straightforward rock with little gimmickry...except for that gawdawful chanting crap at the end of Absolutely Curtains.

OK, drumroll...my choice for favorite is..."The Gold it's in the..."

tough choice, I like all of them, but I would say "Stay" and "Absolutely Curtains" are the weakest.

Um...I hate to say it, but that was going to be my choice for weakest: "The Gold, It's In the...". Well, weakest off a good album, that is. My only objection to the song is that it sounds a LOT like the Doobie Brothers.

For some reason, the chanting on "Absolutely Curtains" does not bother me. I have a fascination with languages and cultures, and I guess that's part of it.

And "Stay"...well, it did not make it as my favourite (see above for that "competition"), but it was certainly one of the more noteworthy tracks, in my opinion. It's one I enjoy playing on the piano and improvising.

I have to agree that OBC is probably one of the most underrated albums by The Floyd. I really do enjoy it as a whole. As evidenced by my signature, you can probably guess my favorite track is "Childhood's End". I like the raw yet powerful nature of it. To each their own.

OBC is highly recommended. It's not their best album but it's definitely very good. And I have to say that I recommend *every single album* by Pink Floyd!!! Even the weakest for my taste (i.e. The Final Cut or Ummagumma studio) are recommended!!! They all have something good to be discovered. And OBC is a quite enjoyable album, it is a simple collection of short songs, no concept, no Echoes-style suites, just good tunes. But it is 100% Pink Floyd.
The best? My favourites are Stay, Wots uh The Deal, Burning Bridges, I think my vote goes to BB.

I would strongly suggest that you do everything short of stealing and killing (sell your body if you must, if you can) to get your mitts on this most overlooked, but very commendable Floyd album.

I'd personally rate it up there with my top five favourites...this week.

sulliman on another OBC board did much better than I in describing the wonderful sound of Wot's...Uh The Deal with Gilmour's "angelic" singing.

And I am appalled that GilmourWhore#96 (FloydWright) doesn't find The Gold It's In The... awe inspiring with one of the longest, near-perfect guitar solos by David I've heard on a studio album. BTW, congrats to FWr on her new status as Thread Policewoman...er...I mean Moderator.

Floyd on!,
Byron

I've had this one for a while and I LOVE IT!!!!! I can't even vote for one I like so I'll have to say all of it. It has to be one of the most visual of their albums with wonderful lyrics and great music. You never get bored of it which is probably why its almost always in my CD player(!) but its a definite must-buy if you haven't got it. The only thing I don't like is the chanting at the end but thats the only major fault I see in it. Otherwise, its perfect! (and you can't say that about most albums)

BTW, congrats FWr for becoming a moderator. What do you have to do to become one (out of curiosity)?

Red Bull gives you wings but PF is stimulation for the mind,

Well spoken, Great One.

As FloydWright pointed out, this track is reflective of the mainstream rock scene at the time, so it's a little different from the Floyd we're used to. Since they were pressed for time while recording this, they just rocked out and moved on. It's got that raw garage-band feel, and as BoaB pointed out, Gilmour just COOKS on that solo.

BTW, F-W, I was not ridiculing "Stay" or "AB-Curtains"; as you put it, I just thought they were weakest on a good album.

Since everyone spoke accolades for this record (especially BoaB), I will find every piece of loose change in my house and buy it.
Thanks for the reccomendations, guys!

Shane, go buy the CD, and if you don't like it, I will personally buy it from you for what you paid, and pay all shipping. My copy of OBC is an old cassette tape, so I need to upgrade anyway. That's how much confidence I have that you'll like it.
