I had to vote other, because to my knowledge, the only song that Floyd ever wrote as a love song was Pigs on the Wing (1 and 2). I'm pretty sure that Roger Waters wrote them for his fiance. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Beautiful song. However, the last verse:

Rack my brain
to try to remember your name
to find
the words to tell you goodbye.

We're talkin' one night love here. It's a sex song, yes, but love?
Same deal in another Rick Wright vocal mentioned. Summer '68. "I hardly even like you I shouldn't care at all."...."we met just 6 hours ago..." "goodbye to you" etc. I think Wish you Were Here could be interpreted as a great love song.

Sort of. In context of the album, the two parts are a framing device... almost as though those three big songs in the middle are a thought-experiment, contingent upon the "If you didn't care..." conditional of the first line. If we lived without love, then the world would be a lot more bleak (like the middle songs); but, since "you know that I care..." life is bearable.

So in that sense, it is a love song... but made poignant by the absence rather than the presence of empathy.

I voted for Bike, though One Slip was a close second. I've always felt that Pink Floyd doesn't have many love songs because their music is aimed at the head, not the heart. As with everything else, when they did do a love song they did it exceptionally well.

Re: Floyd LOVE Songs???

I read recently in a Pink Floyd book that Roger originally wrote 'Pigs on the Wing' as a love song for his then wife (I have no idea who that was), and then later decided to use it to book end the 'Animals' album. No doubt if this is true he would have changed the lyrics a little for its use on the album.

Roger was then married to Lady Carolyne Christie.

I admit San Tropez isn't quite so much so, but A Pillow of Winds, c'mon, you can't be more obvious.
I totally agree, Meddle is as near as they got to making a 'romantic' album. If you listen to it carefully enough, Echoes is also a wonderfully romantic song. Biding My Time (from Relics) is maybe a lost romantic song too, and in my opinion would not have been out of place on Meddle.

"Wasting my time, resting my mind
And I'll never pine for the sad days and the bad days
When we was working from nine to five.
And if you don't mind I'll spend my time
Here by the fire side in the warm light of her eyes.
And if you don't mind I'll spend my time
Here by the fire side in the warm light of her eyes."

So my vote would have gone to Biding My Time.

Re: Floyd LOVE Songs???

Reflecting on this thread, I'd like to say that I think the best love songs Floyd ever wrote were "Wish You Were Here" & "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Not romantic love songs I realize, but the songs in which I hear and feel "love" the most.

Re: Floyd LOVE Songs???

I've always felt the title track from The Final Cut comes closest to a love song for Pink Floyd.
